Strength in Numbers: How Women's Groups Close India's Political Gender Gap

Soledad Artiz Prillaman

Summary: There is a significant gender gap in political participation in India, which is the result of the structure of women's political networks in patriarchal societies. Expanding women's networks has a significant impact on women's political participation, particularly in their attendance at public meetings. The findings also suggest that network size, capacity for collective action, and development of civic skills are important mechanisms underlying political behavior and gendered inequalities in political participation.

Nirmala Nair et al.

Summary: The pragmatic cluster non-randomised controlled trial of women's groups practising participatory learning and action scaled up by government frontline workers in Jharkhand, eastern India, showed a significant reduction in neonatal mortality rates, particularly among the most deprived populations, indicating high cost-effectiveness and warranting scale-up in other high-mortality rural settings.

Relief from usury: Impact of a self-help group lending program in rural India

Summary: The government-led SHG initiative in the Indian state of Bihar has resulted in a dramatic increase in SHG membership, borrowing from SHGs, and a corresponding decline in the use of informal credit after two years. While these credit market impacts could lead to substantial improvements in economic well-being over time, the short-run impact of the program on such outcomes is modest.
