Assessment of the control measures of the category A diseases of Animal Health Law: Newcastle disease

Soren Saxmose Nielsen et al.

Summary: EFSA was tasked by the European Commission to assess the effectiveness of control measures against diseases in Category A list. The opinion focused on control measures for Newcastle disease and reviewed sampling procedures, monitoring period, and protection/surveillance zone requirements. The study found that the 21-day monitoring period is effective in non-vaccinated chicken and turkey flocks, with uncertainty remaining for vaccinated galliform flocks and other bird species. The recommended protection (3 km radius) and surveillance (10 km radius) zones were shown to contain 99% of infections.

Scientific Opinion on the assessment of the control measures of the category A diseases of Animal Health Law: African Swine Fever

Soren Saxmose Nielsen et al.

Summary: EFSA was mandated by the European Commission to assess the effectiveness of control measures against transmissible animal diseases, specifically focusing on African Swine Fever (ASF). The assessment included clinical and laboratory sampling procedures, monitoring periods, and the minimum radius of protection and surveillance zones. Recommendations were provided to support the drafting of legislation and ad hoc requests related to ASF.

Deepening transparency about value-laden assumptions in energy and environmental modelling: improving best practices for both modellers and non-modellers

John Bistline et al.

Summary: This study argues that current practices regarding transparency are insufficient to fully reveal the role of value-laden assumptions in energy and environmental modelling, and proposes additional best practices to increase transparency, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue. Recommendations include providing accessible documentation for stakeholders, increasing policymaker participation, and conducting sensitivity analyses to cover a range of viewpoints.
