Emergence of methicillin resistance predates the clinical use of antibiotics

Jesper Larsen et al.

Summary: This study reveals that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains were present in European hedgehogs before the discovery of antibiotics and have spread among hedgehog populations and between hedgehogs and secondary hosts. The study also shows that the hedgehog dermatophyte Trichophyton erinacei produces two beta-lactam antibiotics that give an advantage to MRSA strains. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding and managing antibiotic resistance in both wild animals and different ecosystems.

Genomic Insights into Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus spa Type t899 Isolates Belonging to Different Sequence Types

Henok Ayalew Tegegne et al.

Summary: This study revealed the genetic diversity and population structure of Staphylococcus aureus presenting the same spa type, t899, but belonging to different STs. The findings suggest that MLST and spa typing methods should be combined to enhance the accuracy in identifying S. aureus lineages. Additional markers, such as tet(M), sak, and seg genes, could be implemented easily and inexpensively to improve lineage identification.

Summary: Data on antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and food are collected annually by EU Member States, jointly analysed by EFSA and ECDC, and reported in a yearly EU Summary Report. The monitoring in 2018 focused on poultry and their derived products, while the monitoring in 2019 specifically targeted pigs, calves, and their derived products.

Emergence of Erythromycin Resistance Methyltransferases in Campylobacter coli Strains in France

Quentin Jehanne et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance in campylobacters, particularly Campylobacter coli isolates, is a global concern. New resistance mechanisms, such as 23S rRNA mutations and methyltransferases like Erm(B) and Erm(N), have been identified through genomic analysis of multiple resistant strains. The emergence of methyltransferases in campylobacters in France is worrying and may pose a challenge in the near future.

A case of blaNDM-1-positive Salmonella Kottbus, Denmark, November 2020

Hans Linde Nielsen et al.

Summary: An 82-year-old Danish man was infected with carbapenemase-producing blaNDM-1-positive Salmonella Kottbus. The blaNDM-1 gene was also found in Escherichia coli and Citrobacter freundii in the same patient, suggesting inter-species plasmid transfer in vivo. Analysis identified similar plasmids originating from East and Southeast Asia, indicating a possible origin for the infection.

High-throughput sequencing reveals genetic determinants associated with antibiotic resistance in Campylobacter spp. from farm-to-fork

Shaimaa F. Mouftah et al.

Summary: Campylobacter species exhibit high levels of resistance to quinolones and macrolides, with multi-drug resistance most commonly found in C. coli isolates. Resistance patterns are similar between isolates from broiler carcasses and clinical samples, indicating the role of animal-derived food in transmitting resistance to humans. Genetic mutations, especially in genes like gyrA and tet(O), play a significant role in conferring resistance to antimicrobials. Dominant clones, such as sub-lineages of CC828 and CC21, are responsible for the dissemination of resistance genes across different niches.

Detection and molecular characterisation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from raw meat in the retail market

Henok Ayalew Tegegne et al.

Summary: MRSA was detected in 35.4% of raw meat samples in the Czech Republic, with poultry being the main source. The predominant ST was ST398, with common spa types including t011, t034, and t2576. Genes associated with infection, such as sea, seg, and sei, were detected in some isolates.
