First fossil foliage record in the red beds from the Upper Jurassic in the Sichuan Basin, southern China

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: The discovery of plant foliage fossils in the red beds of the Upper Jurassic in the Sichuan Basin provides important clues to the paleovegetation and climate of the time, indicating a predominance of coniferous plants and a hot and semi-arid or arid condition. The unique process of fossil preservation observed, along with the presence of gymnosperms and a Classopollis-dominated pollen assemblage, suggests a complex ecological system supported by local environmental conditions conducive to plant growth and regional flood events.

Investigating sources, driving forces and potential health risks of nitrate and fluoride in groundwater of a typical alluvial fan plain

Yong Xiao et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the changes in groundwater chemistry are driven by both water-rock interaction and anthropogenic influences. Anthropogenic inputs/influences are the dominant factors increasing groundwater nitrate content and salinity, posing potential noncarcinogenic risks to various populations through oral intake pathway. Rational measures should be taken to protect groundwater quality out of the threats of anthropogenic pollution.

Liquefaction within a bedding fault: Understanding the initiation and movement of the Daguangbao landslide triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake (Ms=8.0)

Shenghua Cui et al.

Summary: The Daguangbao landslide, triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, was a catastrophic mass movement with a volume of approximately 1.2 x 10(9) m(3). Laboratory tests revealed that the carbonate fault breccia on the sliding layer had a high liquefaction potential and low friction coefficient, which contributed to the initiation and movement of the landslide. Numerical calculations showed that the landslide occurred 36 seconds after the earthquake and collided with a riverbank in the 76th second, indicating that pore-water pressure during seismic shaking intensified the instability and mobility of the slope.

Hydrogeochemical constraints on groundwater resource sustainable development in the arid Golmud alluvial fan plain on Tibetan plateau

Yong Xiao et al.

Summary: Groundwater resource in alluvial aquifers is crucial for the sustainable development of arid regions. A study in a hyper-arid alluvial fan on the Tibetan plateau analyzed 48 phreatic groundwaters to elucidate hydrochemical features, genesis, and constraints on domestic and irrigational water supply. The results showed that groundwater in the area is slightly alkaline and dominated by Cl-Mg-Ca type, with elevated nitrite and ammonia levels posing risks to human health. Despite being suitable for domestic and irrigation purposes, salinity hazard should be a concern. Anthropogenic contamination inputs have resulted in excessive nitrogen and elevated salinity of groundwater. Measures should be taken to protect groundwater resources and address geogenic fluoride in drinking water supply.

Tectonic evolution of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China

Summary: Surface deformation in the Sichuan basin is influenced by two weak extension and compression episodes, leading to the formation of specific structures. The evolution of the basin appears to be controlled by deformation from its peripheral orogens rather than deep lithospheric and mantle processes.

Spatio-temporal analysis of groundwater chemistry, quality and potential human health risks in the Pinggu basin of North China Plain: Evidence from high-resolution monitoring dataset of 2015-2017

Xiao Li et al.

Summary: Long-term monitoring of groundwater chemistry, quality, and human health risk in the Pinggu basin revealed the spatio-temporal evolution of these factors, providing detailed evidence for groundwater utilization. The majority of groundwater samples were suitable for drinking purposes, but quality was influenced by concentrations of total dissolved solids, Ca2+, HCO3-, and NO3-. Human health risk of groundwater drinking was mainly determined by NO3(-) concentration, with children having the highest hazard quotient. Protection and management measures for groundwater resources were formulated based on the analysis of groundwater chemistry, quality, and potential human health risks.

Monitoring and Identifying Wind Turbine Generator Bearing Faults Using Deep Belief Network and EWMA Control Charts

Huajin Li et al.

Summary: Wind turbines are widely installed as a new source of cleaner energy production. A data-driven approach using temporal temperature data for condition monitoring of generator bearings is presented in this paper. Comparative analysis shows that the deep belief network is the most accurate in modeling bearing behavior. An exponentially-weighted moving average control chart and classification models based on LS-SVM are used for trend tracking and fault classification of bearings. The proposed approach has been validated with data from 11 wind turbines.

Hydrochemistry, quality and potential health risk appraisal of nitrate enriched groundwater in the Nanchong area, southwestern China

Yunhui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assessed groundwater quality and health risks in the Nanchong area, southwestern China, using statistical analysis, ion correlation, geomodelling analysis, entropy water quality index, and health risk assessment. The results showed that the concentrations of major ions in groundwater were mainly influenced by calcite dissolution and ion exchange, while nitrate concentrations were controlled by agricultural activities. Most groundwater samples were suitable for drinking, but some posed non-carcinogenic health risks for different population groups, with infants being at the highest risk. Targeted measures focusing on improving agricultural activities are needed to reduce nitrate-related health risks in the future.
