Fatigue and micro-seismic behaviors of concrete disks exposed to cyclic Brazilian testing: A numerical investigation based on a 3D particle-based model

Zhengyang Song et al.

Summary: This article investigates the mechanical behavior of concrete Brazilian Disk (BD) samples under multi-level cyclic loading through numerical analysis. A particle-based 3D model is successfully established to simulate the dynamic stress-controlled cyclic testing. A generalized model based on the time-dependent evolution of bond diameter is proposed, which effectively reproduces the observed stress-strain curves and displacement fields. An acoustic emission (AE) tracking algorithm is implemented to analyze the released AE energy associated with micro fracturing, which is found to be dependent on stress levels. The numerical simulation results and failure pattern are consistent with the experimental results. The differences between cyclic compressive and cyclic Brazilian tests are discussed and summarized.

Macro-meso failure characteristics of circular cavity-contained granite under unconventional cyclic loads: A lab-scale testing

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: The cavity orientation affects the lifetime, strength, deformation, damping ratio, and failure modes of rocks, with higher cavity orientation leading to faster damage propagation and lower AE b-value, volumetric strain, and damping ratio. Shear failure is more likely to occur in rocks with high cavity orientation, highlighting the importance of cavity orientation in rock failure analysis.

Rock mass watering for rock-burst prevention: some thoughts on the mechanisms deduced from laboratory results

Xin Cai et al.

Summary: Water spraying or injection into rock mass is an effective method for preventing rock bursts in deeply buried hard rock engineering projects. Experimental results indicate that the presence of water significantly weakens the strength and energy storage capacity of rocks, leading to gentler failure patterns and reduced dynamicity. Additionally, a simple mechanical model was established to illustrate the local stress regulation by water penetration.

Summary: In this study, the influence of shearing rate on the tangential contact behavior of smooth flat quartz surfaces with different gouges was examined through micromechanical-based experiments. The results showed significant changes in stick-slip instability with decreasing shearing rate, as well as variations in tangential stiffness and friction behavior based on the type of gouge particles. The study provides insights into the frictional behavior of different gouges under different shearing rates and the stick-slip instability at a microscopic scale.

Energy dissipation and damage evolution for dynamic fracture of marble subjected to freeze-thaw and multiple level compressive fatigue loading

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fatigue mechanical behaviors of marble under freeze-thaw treatment, showing that fatigue strength and strain energy decrease while irreversible volumetric deformation increases with the number of cycles. The rate of dissipated energy increases as the cyclic loading level grows. A coupling damage variable is proposed to describe rock damage evolution after freeze-thaw treatment and fatigue loading, with a damage evolution model established to fit the experimental data showing two-phase damage accumulation characteristics.

Mechanical behavior of marble exposed to freeze-thaw-fatigue loading

Zhengyang Song et al.

Summary: The test results indicate that an increase in FT cycles and fatigue load level accelerates the damage rate of marble, leading to larger axial strain rate, radial strain rate, and increasing Poisson's ratio. A warning level is defined based on the evolution of radial strain and Poisson's ratio. Advance ratio and lag ratio are effective indicators for predicting rock failure when subjected to FTF actions.

Mechanical Responses of a Deeply Buried Granite Exposed to Multilevel Uniaxial and Triaxial Cyclic Stresses: Insights into Deformation Behavior, Energy Dissipation, and Hysteresis

Zhengyang Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical responses of deeply seated granite samples through uni/triaxial cyclic tests, highlighting disparities in strain evolution and compressive strength under different loading conditions, as well as the relationships between deformation behavior, dissipated energy, and hysteresis. It also reveals quantitative correlations between strain evolution and cyclic stress levels, determines energy transformation during cyclic loading, and discusses the impacts of confining pressure level on ultimate strain, energy dissipation, and stress-strain phase shift. The mechanical responses of the granite samples subjected to different stress paths and loading strategies are summarized and explained to clarify the discrepancies in mechanical behavior encountered in distinct loading methods.

Summary: The study investigates the activation of a critically stressed natural fracture in granite under pressure-controlled and volume-controlled monotonic and cyclic water injection. Results show that cyclic injection can lead to aseismic fracture slip at smaller peak slip rates compared to monotonic injection, but continued injection after an unstable shut-in stage could result in rapid and unstable fracture slip.
