Novel approach to estimate vertical scale of fluctuation based on CPT data using convolutional neural networks

Jin-Zhang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach to estimate vertical scale of fluctuation (SOF) based on limited CPT data. The CNN model showed excellent performance in estimating vertical SOF with low data availability. The proposed scale factor method effectively addressed the mismatch between actual CPT depth and input data depth for the CNN model, enhancing its applicability.

DEM and theoretical analyses of the face stability of shallow shield cross-river tunnels in silty fine sand

Zhihua Zhang et al.

Summary: A discrete element numerical simulation is used to evaluate the face stability of a shallow shield cross-river tunnel through silty fine sand. The failure mechanism of the soil in front of the tunnel face is analyzed by measuring the characteristics of shear strain, sliding fraction, volumetric strain, particle displacement, and the cohesive failure zone. A new analytical model for shallow shield cross-river tunnels in silty fine sand is proposed based on the numerical results, showing good agreement with existing methods.

Effect of ground surface surcharge on deformational performance of tunnel in spatially variable soil

Jin-Zhang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coupled effect of soil spatial variations and ground surface disturbance on existing tunnels using RFDM and Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that neglecting spatial variability can underestimate tunnel convergence, especially when severely disturbed by nearby environments. The surface surcharge mainly affects the mean value of tunnel convergence, with the coefficient of variation largely influenced by soil spatial variability.

Automated extraction and evaluation of fracture trace maps from rock tunnel face images via deep learning

Jiayao Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes an image-based method for automated rock fracture segmentation and fracture trace quantification, using the FraSegNet model, skeleton extraction algorithm, and polyline approximation algorithm. The research shows that the method outperforms other deep learning approaches and traditional image edge detection algorithms in extracting fracture trace maps and reducing noise, and the quantitative evaluation proves its effectiveness.

Selection of optimal intensity measures for fragility assessment of circular tunnels in soft soil deposits

Zhong-Kai Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates optimal intensity measures (IMs) for circular tunnels in soft soil deposits subjected to seismic shaking, and finds that different IMs are suitable for shallow tunnels compared to moderately deep and deep tunnels. By constructing fragility curves for different tunnels, it improves the seismic fragility analysis and enhances the resilience and adaptability of transportation networks.

Quantitative evaluation of geological uncertainty and its influence on tunnel structural performance using improved coupled Markov chain

Jin-Zhang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of geological uncertainty on tunnel structural performance, proposing a stochastic geological modeling framework and utilizing an improved Markov chain model and mapping approach to address uncertainty. The results demonstrate that the Geological Uncertainty Index (GUI) can quantitatively evaluate the level of uncertainty for boreholes and entire sites.
