The Formation of Spore-Like Akinetes: A Survival Strategy of Filamentous Cyanobacteria

Ritu Garg et al.

Summary: Some cyanobacteria of the order Nostocales can form spore-like akinetes for survival in unfavorable environmental conditions. These akinetes are larger in size, contain abundant reserve products, and can germinate into new vegetative cells. The production of the storage polymer cyanophycin is not essential for the formation and germination of akinetes in a filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413.

The Dual Role of the Glycolipid Envelope in Different Cell Types of the Multicellular Cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413

Ritu Garg et al.

Summary: Anabaena variabilis is a filamentous cyanobacterium capable of differentiating into specialized cells, heterocysts and akinetes, to survive under different stress conditions. Both cell types are characterized by the presence of a thick multilayered envelope, which includes a glycolipid layer. Studies have shown that heterocysts and akinetes use a glycolipid of identical chemical composition in their special envelopes, highlighting the importance of the glycolipid layer for their functions.

Cell-cell communication through septal junctions in filamentous cyanobacteria Ann-Katrin Kieninger and Iris Maldener

Ann-Katrin Kieninger et al.

Summary: Septal junctions are cell-cell connections that physically connect adjacent cells through nanopores in the septal peptidoglycan, with a gating mechanism similar to gap junctions. This primordial control system for cell-cell communication can reversibly close connections under stress, and is crucial for intercellular communication regulation.
