Modelling Fish Growth with Imperfect Data: The Case of Trachurus picturatus

Ana Neves et al.

Summary: This study presents a Bayesian approach to improve plausibility in growth estimates, particularly when small individuals are under-sampled, by using informative priors on growth parameters. The Bayesian method was evaluated in relation to standard growth model fitting methods in the context of the blue jack mackerel, with promising results indicating its potential as a powerful addition in growth modelling using imperfect data.

Sustainability status of the grouper fishery in the Azores archipelago: A length-based approach

Patricia Amorim et al.

Summary: The study found that blacktail comber is in worse condition than dusky grouper in the Azores, currently being fished at unsustainable levels, while dusky grouper is fished at sustainable levels with a spawning potential ratio above 30%. Urgent management measures are proposed to ensure the recovery and sustainability of blacktail comber, while the development of measures taking into account different selectivity by fleet and fishing strategies by island is supported.

First approach to the growth and age corroboration of Northeast Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) in Northern Iberian waters

M. R. Navarro et al.

Summary: This study for the first time analyzed the growth pattern and parameters of Atlantic chub mackerel in Northern Iberian waters, revealing two different growth patterns. The results obtained from otolith marginal analyses and length frequency analyses supported the age estimation criteria used, and the growth parameters from DAE are proposed for future stock assessment.

Fishing pressure and lifespan affect the estimation of growth parameters using ELEFAN

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ELEFAN is robust to changes in size structure due to fishing, but its accuracy and precision depend on the intensity of fishing pressure and life-history traits. The von-Bertalanffy growth function parameters are reliable for short- and medium-lived species, but fishing pressure may substantially bias estimates for long-lived species.
