Easy, selective and colorimetric detection of Zn(II), Cu(II), F -ions by a new piperazine based Schiff base chemosensor along with molecular logic gate formation and live cell images study

Pranabendu Das et al.

Summary: A Schiff base chemosensor with moderate fluorescence activity has been developed for the selective and colorimetric detection of Cu(II), Zn(II), and F- ions. The sensor showed enhanced luminance under UV light after the introduction of Zn(II) and formed a deep green color after the addition of F-. Interestingly, the luminescence color of the sensor became colorless after the addition of Cu(II). The binding constant values and spectroscopic analysis confirmed the formation of bonds between the sensor and the recognized ions. The sensor's bio sensing activity for Zn(II) was confirmed through fluorescence live cell imaging. The sensor's detection of F- ions in drinking water was also successful.

Cadmium Accumulation and Kinetics in Solea senegalensis Tissues under Dietary and Water Exposure and the Link to Human Health

Maria D. Pavlaki et al.

Summary: The study found that cadmium accumulation in different tissues of Solea senegalensis followed the order of muscle, gills, liver, and intestine when exposed to cadmium-contaminated diet and water. After 14 days of uptake, muscle showed lower cadmium accumulation, with the intestine having the highest uptake flux. Cadmium depuration from the liver was not detected, indicating a possible storage compartment for cadmium in Solea senegalensis.

New optofluidic based lab-on-a-chip device for the real-time fluoride analysis

Mahesh P. Bhat et al.

Summary: A PDMS microfluidic channel integrated with a UV-vis fibre-optic spectrometer and a new colorimetric probe was developed for sensitive and real-time quantitative measurements of fluoride ions (F). The device features an 'S' shaped microchannel acting as a microreactor to enhance the reaction between the colorimetric probe and F ions. This optofluidic device demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity for F ions, outperforming conventional methods in detecting real samples.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube-based nanobiosensor for the detection of cadmium in water

S. P. Sreekanth et al.

Summary: The prevalence of cadmium in the ecosystem due to industrial and agricultural processes can lead to inadvertent consumption of hazardous concentrations in food and water. Environmental contamination of cadmium poses a substantial threat to human and animal life. Developing a reliable method for detecting Cd (II) ions, such as the DNA-based electrochemical method discussed in this study, can help reduce exposure and complement existing conventional methods, with potential applications for detecting other heavy metals in environmental samples.

Impact of cadmium pollution on food safety and human health

Ibha Suhani et al.

Summary: Modern urbanization and industrial activities have raised concerns about heavy metal pollution, particularly cadmium which harms almost all life forms with no biological function. It enters ecosystems through natural and anthropogenic sources, impacting different trophic levels in the food chain and raising concerns for food safety and human health. The bioavailability, bioaccessibility, and accumulation of cadmium in soil-plant systems are key factors driving its transfer to different trophic levels, affecting cellular and molecular alterations.

Low-Level Cadmium Exposure and Atherosclerosis

Denisse Diaz et al.

Summary: Cadmium is recognized as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease, with experimental and epidemiological studies showing an association with endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. Although there is no direct evidence, findings from clinical trials suggest that removing cadmium from the body may improve cardiovascular outcomes. Further translational toxicology studies are needed to fully understand the mechanisms of cadmium toxicity and its promotion of atherosclerosis.
