Summary: Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a colorless, nonirritating gas widely used in clinical settings as an anesthetic and analgesic. Recreational abuse of N2O is increasing among young adults, with many unaware of the potential side effects. Abuse of N2O can damage the nervous system, with discontinuation and timely supplementation with vitamin B12 essential for a good prognosis.

Case report of an acute myocardial infarction after high-dose recreational nitrous oxide use: a consequence of hyperhomocysteinaemia?

Summary: This case report highlights the risk of acute myocardial infarction due to recreational use of high-dose nitrous oxide in combination with cannabis. Severe hyperhomocysteinaemia secondary to nitrous oxide-induced vitamin B12 deficiency and vasoconstrictive effects of cannabis may increase the risk of thrombus formation. After treatment, there was improvement in left ventricular function and no recurrence of symptoms.
