Effects of a low-carbohydrate diet on insulin-resistant dyslipoproteinemia-a randomized controlled feeding trial

Cara B. Ebbeling et al.

Summary: This preplanned ancillary study aimed to investigate the effects of diets varying in carbohydrate and saturated fat content on cardiovascular disease risk factors. The results showed that a low-carbohydrate diet high in saturated fat improved insulin-resistant dyslipoproteinemia and lipoprotein(a), with no adverse effect on LDL cholesterol.

Why does obesity cause diabetes?

Samuel Klein et al.

Summary: The accumulation of excessive body fat can lead to type 2 diabetes, and the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with an increase in body mass index. The global increase in obesity has therefore resulted in a corresponding increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. The mechanisms linking obesity and type 2 diabetes involve complex changes in b cell function, adipose tissue biology, and multi-organ insulin resistance, which can be improved or even normalized through weight loss.

Efficacy of high-intensity interval- or continuous aerobic-training on insulin resistance and muscle function in adults with metabolic syndrome: a clinical trial

Jaime Gallo-Villegas et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of high-intensity, low-volume interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on insulin resistance (IR), muscle mass, muscle activation, and serum musclin in adults with metabolic syndrome. The results showed no significant differences between the two training methods in reducing IR, increasing muscle mass, and improving body composition, although both were effective in improving insulin resistance, muscle mass, and body composition.

Adiponectin/leptin ratio increases after a 12-week very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, and exercise training in healthy individuals: A non-randomized, parallel design study

Lukas Cipryan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that in healthy young individuals, consuming a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet combined with regular exercise over a 12-week period can lead to reductions in body weight and fat mass, along with beneficial changes in serum adiponectin and leptin concentrations, supporting the use of this dietary strategy for the prevention of chronic diseases associated with systemic low-grade inflammation.

Efficacy and safety of low and very low carbohydrate diets for type 2 diabetes remission: systematic review and meta-analysis of published and unpublished randomized trial data

Summary: Patients with type 2 diabetes adhering to a low carbohydrate diet for six months may experience remission of diabetes without adverse consequences. There were significant improvements in weight loss, triglycerides, and insulin sensitivity at six months, but these improvements diminished at 12 months. VLCDs were found to be less effective than less restrictive LCDs for weight loss at six months, but this was due to diet adherence.

Stronger association of triglyceride glucose index than the HOMA-IR with arterial stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes: a real-world single-centre study

Shujie Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to HOMA-IR, the TyG index is independently and more strongly associated with arterial stiffness in patients with T2D. Seemingly unrelated regression estimation analysis and multivariable logistic analyses showed that the TyG index was positively associated with the prevalence of increased arterial stiffness, especially in older patients with a longer duration of diabetes and poor glycaemic control. Subgroup analyses revealed a more significant association between the TyG index and arterial stiffness in specific patient populations.

Intake of food rich in saturated fat in relation to subclinical atherosclerosis and potential modulating effects from single genetic variants

Federica Laguzzi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between intake of saturated fats and subclinical atherosclerosis, as well as the potential influence of genetic variants. Results showed an association between high intake of saturated fats and C-IMT thickness, but this association was no longer significant in multivariate analysis. There was no clear association between high intake of saturated fats and risk of atherosclerotic progression. Additionally, no significant genetic-dietary fat interactions were identified in relation to risk of subclinical atherosclerosis.
