A1-and A2 beta-casein on health-related outcomes: a scoping review of animal studies

Daniela Kuellenberg de Gaudry et al.

Summary: The study reviewed 42 animal studies investigating the effects of A1 beta-casein or BCM-7 compared to A2 beta-casein on health-related outcomes, with only a few studies directly comparing A1 and A2 milk. Most studies focused on the physiological properties of BCM-7 as an opioid peptide. More research in animal models is needed to address the gaps in understanding the effects of different types of beta-casein on health.

Beneficial Effects of Milk Having A2 β-Casein Protein: Myth or Reality?

Sae-In S. Kay et al.

Summary: Diet, particularly the consumption of milk and milk products, plays a significant role in human health. The beta-casein proteins in cow milk, specifically A1 and A2 subvariants, have different effects on various organ systems and health outcomes. While A1 consumption is associated with inflammatory markers and opioid-like responses, A2 consumption is easier to digest and has beneficial effects. Further research is needed to understand the short- and long-term effects of consuming A1 and A2 beta-casein proteins.

The Interplay Between Diet and the Epigenome in the Pathogenesis of Type-1 Diabetes

Amira Kohil et al.

Summary: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a complex autoimmune disease with increasing incidence worldwide. The interplay between genetic and environmental factors contributes to its pathogenesis. The relationship between diet and epigenetics plays a significant role in the development of T1DM.

Health-related outcomes of genetic polymorphism of bovine β-casein variants: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials

Davor Daniloski et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the health impacts of A1 and A2 genetic variants of bovine I3-casein, with results showing that consumption of A2 I3-casein milk can lead to improved tolerance of milk by reducing gut related discomfort. However, the exact mechanisms and specific beneficiaries are still poorly understood at present.

Casomorphins and Gliadorphins Have Diverse Systemic Effects Spanning Gut, Brain and Internal Organs

Keith Bernard Woodford

Summary: Food-derived opioid peptides can have diverse and systemic effects on health by binding to opioid receptors in the gut, brain, and other organs. However, challenges exist in demonstrating these effects due to manifestation delays and the complex role of the microbiome. Modifying risk through reducing intake of opioids in certain foods may be a challenging yet effective nutritional strategy for the future.
