Runoff and focused groundwater-recharge response to flooding rains in the arid zone of Australia

R. Ian Acworth et al.

Summary: The groundwater recharge investigation in the arid zone of Australia utilized a variety of hydrogeological techniques to study the response of the aquifer to rainfall events. The results showed that the total magnitude of a flood event is not the main control on indirect groundwater recharge at this location, and indicated the episodic and nonlinear nature of recharge in such environments. More detailed and long-term field investigation in other arid zone locations is recommended to further understand the dynamic processes governing groundwater recharge.

Quantifying and understanding the source of recharge for alluvial systems in arid environments through the development of a seepage model

Andrew Watson et al.

Summary: In rural settings, groundwater is often the most utilised freshwater resource and river seepage plays an important role in recharging alluvial groundwater systems. A study developed a river seepage component for a rainfall/runoff model, which showed that by accounting for seepage, observed low flows were well simulated. However, uncertainties in precipitation data and quality, as well as changes in station density, impacted the simulation results.
