Responses of Swamp Cypress (Taxodium distichum) and Chinese Willow (Salix matsudana) Roots to Periodic Submergence in Mega-Reservoir: Changes in Organic Acid Concentration

Xinrui He et al.

Summary: In a study exploring the responses of two woody plant species to flooding, it was found that Taxodium distichum and Salix matsudana could adapt well to different water regimes, adjusting their organic acid metabolisms to normal levels in the spring. The exotic species had a more stable metabolism to winter flooding, while the native species responded more actively to long-term winter flooding, making both species viable for vegetation restoration in specific conditions.

Responses of Ecological Stoichiometric Characteristics of Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus to Periodic Submergence in Mega-Reservoir: Growth of Taxodium distichum and Taxodium ascendens

Dongdong Ding et al.

Summary: The study found that periodic submergence affected the stoichiometric characteristics and growth conditions of Taxodium distichum and Taxodium ascendens, but both species grew well. Carbon content exhibited a pattern of leaves > branches > fine roots, while nitrogen and phosphorus content showed a pattern of leaves > fine roots > branches. The N/P ratio was lower than the critical ratio of 14, indicating that the nutrient allocation between different organs in response to periodic submergence allowed for normal growth of the two conifer species in the Three Gorges Reservoir region.

Effects of Exogenous Calcium on Adaptive Growth, Photosynthesis, Ion Homeostasis and Phenolics of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. Plants under Salt Stress

Yun Guo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the addition of 10 mmol/L exogenous calcium chloride had a positive effect on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of G. sinensis under salt stress. Additionally, the exogenous calcium attenuated the cytotoxicity caused by Na+ under salt stress and promoted the equilibrium of ion homeostasis. The addition of exogenous calcium ions was beneficial for the survival of G. sinensis plants on salinized land and the increase of effective active ingredient content, including phenolic compounds, which is crucial for addressing environmental issues such as desertification of saline-alkali land.
