Green extraction of biomolecules from algae using subcritical and supercritical fluids

Summary: Biomolecules present in algae, such as carbohydrates, proteins, pigments, and lipids, have wide applications in various industries. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and subcritical water extraction (SWE) are considered as sustainable and promising green extraction technologies for extracting valuable bioactive molecules from algae. This review discusses the extraction of biomolecules using SFE and SWE techniques, the improvement of these technologies, and the challenges and perspectives in their use on algae.

Development of a method for phycocyanin recovery from filamentous cyanobacteria and evaluation of its stability and antioxidant capacity

Summary: A new method was developed to efficiently recover phycocyanin from filamentous cyanobacteria Pseudanabaena sp. ABRG5-3 and Limnothrix sp. SK1-2-1, yielding 28-30% dry cell weight of pure phycocyanin. The stability of phycocyanins at different pH levels, high temperatures, and light conditions, as well as their antioxidant abilities, were assessed with positive results, showing potential for low-cost production of high functional phycocyanin concentrations.
