The HDL Proteome Watch: Compilation of studies leads to new insights on HDL function

W. Sean Davidson et al.

Summary: The HDL proteome, identified through various studies using different methodologies across multiple laboratories, provides valuable insights into HDL function. Known functions of consensus HDL proteins extend beyond traditional roles in lipid transport, pointing towards involvement in innate immunity, inflammation, cell adhesion, hemostasis, protease regulation, as well as vitamin and metal binding. Further research is needed to address significant issues identified in these studies.

HDL Is Not Dead Yet

Shuhui Wang Lorkowski et al.

Summary: High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels are inversely correlated with coronary heart disease (CHD), but the causal relationship between HDL and CHD is unclear. Recent studies have challenged the hypothesis that HDL is protective against CHD, but subsequent research suggests that specific HDL characteristics are causally related to decreased CHD. Different aspects of HDL structure and function may better indicate HDL's protective activity against CHD, beyond simply measuring HDL-C levels.

Sex-Specific U-Shaped Relationships Between High- Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels and 10-year Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events: A Nationwide Cohort Study of 5.7 Million South Koreans

Hyun Suk Yang et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between HDL-C levels and 10-year major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and found gender differences. The extremely high HDL-C group had a higher 10-year MACE than the high group in men, while the extremely high HDL-C group had the lowest 10-year MACE in women, but if the starting point for extremely high levels was increased, women's risk level would increase.

Glycans and Glycan-Binding Proteins as Regulators and Potential Targets in Leukocyte Recruitment

Franziska Krautter et al.

Summary: The recruitment of leukocytes is a complex process involving interactions between proteins expressed by the endothelium and circulating leukocytes. Recent research has expanded our understanding of these interactions, identifying novel lectins and regulatory pathways. Targeting glycans and glycan-binding proteins could offer new therapeutic strategies for modulating leukocyte recruitment and transmigration during inflammation.

Summary: This study presents a method for isolating HDL particles using sequential flotation density ultracentrifugation and fast protein liquid chromatography with a size exclusion column. The method allows for high purity HDL isolation for functional analyses, and also enables researchers to selectively isolate specific HDL fractions of interest. Certain proteins are found to be enriched in either large or small HDL particles.
