Decarbonization of the Indian electricity sector: Technology choices and policy trade-offs

Ivan Rudnick et al.

Summary: India's electricity demand is expected to triple in the next twenty years, with a significant expansion of renewable energy, particularly solar PV. Energy storage competes with natural gas and coal in integrating renewable energy. Policies that explicitly limit CO2 emissions are more cost-effective and effective at reducing emissions and air pollution compared to renewable portfolio standard (RPS) policies.

Least-cost targets and avoided fossil fuel capacity in India's pursuit of renewable energy

Ranjit Deshmukh et al.

Summary: India has ambitious targets for wind and solar energy installation by 2030, with solar making up the majority of capacity. The study found that systems with solar photovoltaic comprising 25% to 50% of the total renewable target have the lowest carbon mitigation costs. Contrary to assumptions, meeting high renewable targets in India will reduce the need for new fossil fuel power plants. High renewable energy systems with a majority of wind plants could result in electricity costs similar to fossil fuel-dominated systems.
