Salvinia-like slippery surface with stable and mobile water/air contact line

Xiaomei Li et al.

Summary: A novel approach of designing Salvinia-like slippery surfaces with enhanced stability and lateral mobility has been proposed, inspired by hydrophobic leaves in nature. These surfaces show increased resistance against pressure and impact, as well as reduced hydrodynamic drag, making them potentially useful in various industrial fields.

Robust magnetic behavior in two-dimensional GaN caused by atomic vacancies

Boyu Wang et al.

Summary: Introduction of atomic vacancies, specifically Ga (V-Ga) and N (V-N) vacancies, in 2D planar and buckled GaN can induce different magnetic behaviors. High V(Ga) ratio in 2D planar GaN results in half-metallicity and 100% spin polarization, while low vacancy ratios maintain semiconductive properties. In 2D buckled GaN, the band gap is dependent on V(Ga) and can be tuned by adjusting the vacancy ratio.

Structure and Band Alignment of InP Photocatalysts Passivated by TiO2 Thin Films

Luis A. Cipriano et al.

Summary: Composite materials made of low-band-gap semiconductors covered by thin oxide layers are increasingly used in solar cells and photocatalysis, with InP/TiO2 heterojunctions showing high efficiency due to visible light absorption and efficient migration of photogenerated electrons. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong interface chemical bonds make the formation of InP/TiO2 favorable. The system behaves as a type II junction, with the highest efficiency predicted for film thicknesses of 2-3 nm providing a good compromise between favorable band edge alignment and efficient transfer of photogenerated electrons.

Van der Waals epitaxy of nearly single-crystalline nitride films on amorphous graphene-glass wafer

Fang Ren et al.

Summary: A novel nanorod-assisted van der Waals epitaxy method has been developed, allowing for the growth of nearly single-crystalline GaN films on amorphous silica glass substrates. This approach enables the growth and lifting off of GaN-based light-emitting diodes with record internal quantum efficiency, and offers the potential for high-quality growth of nitrides on arbitrary substrates.

Structure and electronic bandgap tunability of m-plane GaN multilayers

Xueru Cai et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the structural and electronic band gap properties of m-plane GaN vary with the number of atomic layers, leading to unique layer-dependent changes and transitions in band gap type. By examining the relationship between structure and electronic band gap, it is shown that the unsaturated surface structure plays a crucial role in the band gap type transition.

Direct Growth of Germanene at Interfaces between Van der Waals Materials and Ag(111)

Seiya Suzuki et al.

Summary: Germanene, a 2D honeycomb germanium crystal, is grown at graphene/Ag(111) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)/Ag(111) interfaces by segregating germanium atoms. A simple annealing process in N-2 or H-2/Ar at ambient pressure leads to the formation of germanene, indicating that an ultrahigh-vacuum condition is not necessary. The grown germanene is stable in air and uniform over the entire area covered with a van der Waals (vdW) material.
