PFAS and their substitutes in groundwater: Occurrence, transformation and remediation

Bentuo Xu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the occurrence, transformation, and remediation of PFAS in groundwater, highlighting high concentrations of substances like PFOA, PFBA, PFOS, and PFBS. Photocatalysis was identified as an ideal technology for PFAS removal, with the potential for combining with electrochemical or membrane filtration methods for enhanced efficacy.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the soil-plant system: Sorption, root uptake, and translocation

Weiping Mei et al.

Summary: PFASs are widely present in the environment and the soil-plant system plays a crucial role in their bioaccumulation. Research shows that the root concentration factor of PFASs is not related to hydrophobicity, while the translocation factor is negatively correlated with PFAS hydrophobicity. Further studies on different forms of PFASs and their interactions with plants are needed for a comprehensive understanding of their environmental fate in the soil-plant system.

Uptake, Acropetal Translocation, and Enantioselectivity of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate in Maize Coexisting with Copper

Mengke Song et al.

Summary: The study found that the presence of different concentrations of copper (Cu) had varying effects on PFOS, with low concentrations causing an increase in PFOS concentration in roots and high concentrations damaging root cell membranes and increasing root permeability. It was also observed that Cu inhibition of carrier proteins could lead to the suppression of acropetal translocation of PFOS, and the presence of a protein-mediated uptake pathway was evidenced by enantiomer fraction (EF) results.

Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at high concentrations in neonatal Australian pinnipeds

Shannon Taylor et al.

Summary: The study investigated PFAS exposure in Australian pinnipeds, finding differences in exposure levels and PFAS profiles between species in South Australia and Victoria. Detectable concentrations of PFAS in Australian pinniped pups highlight the importance of maternal transfer of these toxicants, suggesting a need for further investigation into potential health impacts on these marine animals.
