Exploring the Effect of Cation Vacancies in TiO2: Lithiation Behavior of n-Type and p-Type TiO2

Moo Dong Lee et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of V-O and V-Ti defects in TiO2 on Li+ storage behavior. Results show that V-O can enhance capacity at low rates, but over-lithiation is detrimental to cycling stability. In contrast, V-Ti improves the rate performance and cycling stability of TiO2.

New Class of Titanium Niobium Oxide for a Li-Ion Host: TiNbO4 with Purely Single-Phase Lithium Intercalation

Jeongmin Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a new class of titanium niobium oxide (TNO) material TiNbO4 was synthesized by changing the reaction atmosphere into a slightly reductive environment and using in situ carbonization. The lithium intercalation process in TiNbO4 occurs via a purely solid-solution process. The distinctive electrochemical behavior of TiNbO4, attributed to its unique structural and electronic properties, presents great potential for the development of high-performance anode materials.

Disentangling faradaic, pseudocapacitive, and capacitive charge storage: A tutorial for the characterization of batteries, supercapacitors, and hybrid systems

T. Schoetz et al.

Summary: Today's electrochemical energy storage technologies aim to combine high specific energy and power, as well as long cycle life, into one system. To achieve this, researchers need to understand and control the co-existence of multiple charge storage mechanisms. This tutorial review provides a comprehensive guide to defining, clarifying, and discussing the faradaic, capacitive, and pseudocapacitive mechanisms, as well as strategies for disentangling them, in order to advance the research of hybrid energy storage systems.
