High-performance thin layer chromatography-based phytochemical and bioactivity characterisation of anticancer endophytic fungal extracts derived from marine plants

Siong Meng Lim et al.

Summary: This study assessed the anticancer potential of ethyl acetate endophytic fungal extracts derived from marine plants along Morib Beach in Malaysia. The results indicated that MBS 3.2 was the most potent extract against HCT116, possibly due to its high polyphenolic content and antioxidant potential. Further mechanistic studies are warranted based on the current findings.

Summary: Diethyl sulfate (DES)-based chemical mutagenesis was used to diversify secondary metabolites in different fungal strains. A mutant strain of Penicillium oxalicum was isolated and found to produce 10 bioactive molecules. Compounds like tuckolide, methylpenicinoline, and penipanoid A showed potent antibacterial activity, while N-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]formamide and tuckolide demonstrated strong antioxidant properties. DES-based mutagenesis was proven to be an effective strategy in diversifying fungal secondary metabolites.

Plant associated fungal endophytes as a source of natural bioactive compounds

Nilesh Rai et al.

Summary: Endophytes are a significant source of bioactive compounds that mimic plant-based metabolites, and the relationship between host plants and endophytes plays a crucial role in fungal colonisation and extraction of bioactive compounds. Bioactive compounds derived from fungal endophytes have various pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, and immunomodulatory effects. The use of bioinformatics tools and advanced techniques can enhance research on fungal endophytes.
