Virulence of Clinical Candida Isolates

Martyna Mroczynska et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the factors enabling Candida spp. infections are related to the expression of proteases, hemolysins, and esterases, and some isolates display high virulence while others are avirulent or of low virulence.

How major fungal infections can initiate severe autoimmune diseases

Kevin Roe

Summary: Fungal infections have been overlooked as a potential cause of autoimmune diseases compared to viral and bacterial infections. The decrease in TREG cells and increase in certain cytokines production due to major fungal infections can lead to severe autoimmune diseases. Antibiotic usage can alter the balance between bacterial and fungal populations, potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases through the increase in fungal populations. CD4 TH17 T-cells and certain interleukins may play a role in the link between major fungal infections and the higher incidence of autoimmune diseases.
