Phospholipase C (AoPLC2) regulates mycelial development, trap morphogenesis, and pathogenicity of the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora

Meihua Xie et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the diverse functions of phospholipase C in Arthrobotrys oligospora, including its role in the development of hyphae, spores, and cell nuclei, responses to stress, formation of traps, and predation of nematodes. The study also highlights the involvement of phospholipase C in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and regulation of trap morphogenesis in nematode-trapping fungi.

Aolatg1 and Aolatg13 Regulate Autophagy and Play Different Roles in Conidiation, Trap Formation, and Pathogenicity in the Nematode-Trapping Fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora

Duanxu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study characterized the roles of autophagy-related proteins Aolatg1 and Aolatg13 in the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora. The results showed that Aolatg1 plays a crucial role in mycelial growth, conidiation, trap formation, and nematode predation, while Aolatg13 does not significantly affect these phenotypic traits. Additionally, the gene ontology and pathway analysis revealed the involvement of Aolatg1 in transcription regulation and metabolic pathways. These findings provide insights into the role of autophagy in trap formation and pathogenicity in nematode-trapping fungi.

Ric8 acts as a regulator of G-protein signalling required for nematode-trapping lifecycle of Arthrobotrys oligospora

Na Bai et al.

Summary: In this study, an orthologous Ric8 (AoRic8) in Arthrobotrys oligospora was characterized using multi-omics analyses. The results demonstrated a crucial role for AoRic8 in fungal growth, environmental adaption, and nematode predation through control of cell cycle, organelle, and secondary metabolism by G-protein signaling. Metabolomic analysis revealed significant downregulation of many compounds in Delta Aoric8 mutants compared to the wild-type strain.

Distinctive role of fluG in the adaptation of Beauveria bassiana to insect-pathogenic lifecycle and environmental stresses

Chong-Tao Guo et al.

Summary: Disruption of fluG in Beauveria bassiana leads to limited conidiation defect, which can be alleviated with longer incubation time and is associated with the up-regulation/down-regulation of other related genes. Increased sensitivities to stresses and decreased virulence were observed in Delta fluG strains, indicating the essential role of fluG in fungal adaptation to the insect-pathogenic lifecycle.

Pleiotropic roles of Ras GTPases in the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora identified through multi-omics analyses

Le Yang et al.

Summary: The three orthologous Ras GTPases in A. oligospora have pleiotropic roles in regulating mycelial growth, conidiation, stress resistance, and pathogenicity, as well as affecting mitochondrial activity, autophagy, and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. Transcriptome and metabolic analyses revealed their involvement in signal transduction, energy production, and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, providing insights into their essential roles in vegetative growth, development, and pathogenicity in nematode-trapping fungi.

Functional analysis of seven regulators of G protein signaling (RGSs) in the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora

Ni Ma et al.

Summary: The study identified seven putative regulators of G protein signaling (RGSs) in the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora. Deletion of Rgs genes resulted in increased intracellular cAMP levels and defects in mycelia growth, development, trap formation, and nematocidal activity. Transcriptomic analysis revealed enrichment of amino acid metabolic and biosynthetic processes in the Delta AoFlbA mutant compared to the wild type. Additionally, the expansion of Gas1 family genes in A. oligospora and their differential expression during trap formation suggested their importance in conidiation, trap formation, and pathogenicity.
