Observation of second-order meron polarization textures in optical microcavities

Mateusz Krol et al.

Summary: This study reports the experimental observation of stable individual second-order meron and antimeron in an electromagnetic field, formed by confining light into a liquid-crystal-filled cavity. These observations could potentially introduce topologically robust room-temperature optical vector textures into the field of photonic information processing and storage.

Optical polarization skyrmionic fields in free space

Rodrigo Gutierrez-Cuevas et al.

Summary: In this study, optical beams with robust skyrmionic structures in their polarization fields have been successfully constructed in free space. These structures exhibit both circular and linear polarizations, providing a high degree of topological protection without nonlinear interactions. The construction is enabled by spin-orbit coupling and standing-wave configurations.

Particle-like topologies in light

Danica Sugic et al.

Summary: This study experimentally creates and measures a topological 3D skyrmionic hopfion in fully structured light, establishing the skyrmionic mapping by adjusting both polarization and phase profiles. The resulting light field's Stokes parameters and phase are synthesized into a Hopf fibration texture, allowing for volumetric full-field reconstruction of the Pi(3) mapping and measurement of a quantized topological charge. This research opens new avenues for 3D optical data encoding and metrology, providing experimentally-accessible photonic analogues to various particle-like 3D topological textures.

Full-Bloch beams and ultrafast Rabi-rotating vortices

Lorenzo Dominici et al.

Summary: In this study, a full-Bloch beam of exciton polaritons was realized, displaying peculiar dynamics of spiraling vortices with oscillating linear and angular momenta. The vortex motion was shown to result from distortions of trajectories through a homeomorphic mapping between Rabi rotation of the full wave function and Apollonian circles in real space. These full-Bloch beams offer prospects in fundamental research and the Rabi-rotating vortices they yield could lead to interesting applications such as ultrafast optical tweezers.
