Revealing defect-mode-enabled energy localization mechanisms of a one-dimensional phononic crystal

Soo-Ho Jo et al.

Summary: Phononic crystals have the ability to manipulate elastic waves, with this study proposing an analytical model to reveal the fundamental mechanisms behind defect-mode-enabled energy localization. The study demonstrates that defect-mode shapes are normal modes, and that evanescent waves in a band gap play a crucial role in the formation and splitting of defect bands.

Topological cavities in phononic plates for robust energy harvesting

Zhihui Wen et al.

Summary: The study proposes using phononic thin plate systems for robust energy harvesting application relying on zero-dimensional cavities confined by the Kekule's distorted topological vortices. The harvesting power induced by topological cavities is about 30 times that of the bare plate. Further studies show that the proposed energy harvesting system is highly robust against symmetry-preserving defects and is less influenced even for symmetry-breaking defects at moderate perturbation level.

An analytical model of a phononic crystal with a piezoelectric defect for energy harvesting using an electroelastically coupled transfer matrix

Soo-Ho Jo et al.

Summary: This study introduces an electroelastically coupled analytical model of a PnC with a piezoelectric defect, allowing prediction of defect band frequencies, defect mode shapes, and output electric power across external electrical resistance. The proposed model shows good agreement with finite element method results and offers parameterization of the electroelastically coupled transfer matrix in an explicit manner.

A semi-analytical model for energy harvesting of flexural wave propagation on thin plates by piezoelectric composite beam resonators

Zuowei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel plate-harvester system with local oscillators for energy harvesting of flexural wave propagation. A semi-analytical model was developed using multiple scattering theory and coupled electroelastic dynamics, which was validated through experimentation. Parametric studies showed that the proposed system's efficiency can be enhanced by utilizing multiple local oscillators arranged in a square pattern.

Summary: The study demonstrates the enhancement of sound energy harvesting by focusing acoustic waves using a 3D-printed gradient-index phononic crystal lens. Numerical simulations and experimental validations show excellent agreement, with the lens significantly increasing the intensity of sound energy and enabling micro-Watt level power output. This technology has potential applications for wireless sensors and other low-power electronic components.

Underwater stealth metasurfaces composed of split-orifice-conduit hybrid resonators

Dongwoo Lee et al.

Summary: This study presents an underwater stealth metasurface using split-orifice-conduit (SOC) hybrid resonators to reduce acoustic reflectance significantly. The research provides a theoretical analysis of SOC elements and demonstrates the possibility of tuning absorption with respect to resonating frequency by adjusting geometrical parameters. The hybrid mechanism enables access to coupled resonances, leading to broadband absorption even in challenging underwater conditions, making it a promising development for underwater stealth technologies.

Summary: This study proposes an elastic metasurface composed of slender beam resonators to control low-frequency flexural waves' wavefront, achieving phase gradient through adjusting resonator thickness and dynamic wave functions such as deflection and focusing. Experimental results validate the design and theoretical models of the focusing metasurface, which is also utilized for low-frequency energy harvesting with nearly nine times improvement in harvested power output compared to the baseline harvester.
