Interfacial charge transfer and persistent metallicity of ultrathin SrIrO3/SrRuO3 heterostructures

Jocienne N. Nelson et al.

Summary: The study of interface quantum materials has revealed many previously unknown physical phenomena, such as unconventional superconductivity, topological phases, and Majorana fermions. By using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and molecular beam epitaxy, this research investigates the electronic structure, charge transfer, doping profile, and carrier effective masses of the interface between SrIrO3 and SrRuO3. The study finds that electrons are transferred from SrIrO3 to SrRuO3, and metallicity is preserved even in a single layer of SrIrO3, avoiding the metal-insulator transition typically observed in SrIrO3 due to strong hybridization of the Ir and Ru t(2g) states.

Near-Atomic-Scale Mapping of Electronic Phases in Rare Earth Nickelate Superlattices

Bernat Mundet et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoscale mapping of the distinct electronic phases characterizing the metal-insulator transition displayed by rare-earth nickelate compounds was achieved using scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The evolution of fine structures at O K and Ni L edges across different NdNiO3/SmNiO3 superlattices was tracked, revealing electronic states and spatial configurations of metallic/insulating regions. The width of metallic/insulating boundaries at the NdNiO3/SmNiO3 interfaces was estimated to be approximately four unit cells.

Structural Monoclinicity and Its Coupling to Layered Magnetism in Few-Layer CrI3

Xiaoyu Guo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Raman spectra of CrI3 display different characteristics based on layer number, with energy separation increasing with sample thickness. As temperature decreases, the split modes tend to merge but remain separated until 10 K, indicating a failed structural phase transition attempt. Magnetic field-induced distortion also affects the CrI3 structure.

Database, Features, and Machine Learning Model to Identify Thermally Driven Metal-Insulator Transition Compounds

Alexandru B. Georgescu et al.

Summary: Metal-insulator transition (MIT) compounds can exhibit metallic or insulating behavior depending on physical conditions, with a subset driven by temperature. Research on thermally driven MIT materials is limited by scientists' domain knowledge and focus on a subset of possible features. Building a material database through natural language processing allows for the identification of new features and classification of MIT materials.

Systematic Study of Monolayer to Trilayer CrI3: Stacking Sequence Dependence of Electronic Structure and Magnetism

Duo Wang et al.

Summary: The magnetic properties of monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer CrI3 have been studied, revealing variations in interlayer magnetic coupling and intralayer exchange interactions with different numbers of layers. Interestingly, interlayer interactions are independent of the number of layers, while the magnetic ordering temperature increases with the number of layers. Additionally, Curie temperatures from Monte Carlo simulations and adiabatic magnon spectra for all stacking sequences considered were presented.

Possible Persistence of Multiferroic Order down to Bilayer Limit of van der Waals Material NiI2

Hwiin Ju et al.

Summary: This study reveals the possible existence of a multiferroic state with coexisting antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders in bilayer flakes of Nil, with a transition temperature of about 20 K. The magnitude and direction of the ferroelectric order arising from the cycloidal spin order were successfully traced using optical second-harmonic generation technique. This observation will inspire extensive efforts to demonstrate multifunctionality in vdW materials, which have been largely explored using heterostructures of singly ferroic materials.

Charge order textures induced by non-linear couplings in a half-doped manganite

Ismail El Baggari et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the capability of cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy in directly mapping the local arrangements and symmetries of electronic order, providing a useful method for studying strongly correlated systems. Using Nd1/2Sr1/2MnO3 as an example, the authors show the nanoscale coexistence of an exotic intermediate state and the importance of lattice coupling in controlling the selection between competing ground states.

Dependence of DFT plus DMFT results on the construction of the correlated orbitals

Jonathan Karp et al.

Summary: The sensitivity of density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations to different constructions of the correlated orbitals are investigated through a detailed comparison of results for NdNiO2 using various methods. Different methods yield varying results for mass enhancements and orbital occupancies, impacting the understanding of multiorbital effects and charge transfer physics. However, for CaCuO2, while the methods yield quantitatively different mass enhancements, they still lead to the same qualitative physics.
