Racial Differences in Adherence to Lung Cancer Screening Follow-up A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Yukiko Kunitomo et al.

Summary: This study found that Black patients have lower adherence to follow-up after lung cancer screening compared to White patients. This disparity exists across all malignancy risk levels determined by initial screening results. Further research is needed to identify the barriers contributing to these racial disparities in lung cancer screening adherence, with a focus on increasing physician education and the involvement of screening program coordinators to ensure equity in screening benefits for eligible Black patients.

Healthcare Access, Utilization, and Preventive Health Behaviors by Eligibility for Lung Cancer Screening

Eric A. Miller et al.

Summary: The US Preventive Services Task Force recommended low-dose CT screening for high-risk smokers, but usage remains low. Efforts to promote lung cancer screening need to consider the population's receptiveness to preventive healthcare and cancer screening, as well as the varying behaviors among eligible subgroups. Eligible current and former smokers showed different healthcare utilization and screening concordance compared to never smokers and to each other.

Access to Lung Cancer Screening in the Veterans Health Administration Does Geographic Distribution Match Need in the Population?

Jacqueline H. Boudreau et al.

Summary: Studies have shown uneven access to Medicare-approved lung cancer screening programs in the United States, especially for rural veterans. Despite partnering with the GO(2) Foundation for Lung Cancer to expand capacity and access, there are still geographic disparities, particularly in states with the highest proportions of rural veterans.

Screening for Lung Cancer CHEST Guideline and Expert Panel Report

Peter J. Mazzone et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that low-dose CT screening for lung cancer can result in a favorable balance of benefit and harms. Factors such as the selection of screen-eligible individuals, the quality of imaging and image interpretation, the management of screen-detected findings, and the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions can impact this balance.

Examining lung cancer screening utilization with public-use data: Opportunities and challenges

Kristin G. Maki et al.

Summary: Low-dose computed tomography screening for lung cancer is recommended for high-risk smokers meeting specific eligibility criteria, but shared decision-making consultation is required due to associated risks. National surveys currently do not fully assess adherence to current LCS guidelines.

Association of Social and Behavioral Risk Factors With Mortality Among US Veterans With COVID-19

J. Daniel Kelly et al.

Summary: In an integrated health system like the VA, social and behavioral risk factors were not associated with mortality from COVID-19. Further research is needed to confirm the potential of an integrated health system to provide support services for households with COVID-19 and populations at risk for the disease.

Summary: The UKLS trial showed that a single LDCT screening can significantly reduce lung cancer mortality, with results similar to the NELSON and NLST trials. The meta-analysis of nine randomized trials provided unequivocal support for lung cancer screening in identified risk groups.

State Variation in Low-Dose Computed Tomography Scanning for Lung Cancer Screening in the United States

Stacey A. Fedewa et al.

Summary: The national lung cancer screening rate remained steady between 3.3% and 3.4% in 2016 and 2017, but increased to 5.0% in 2018. There was wide variation in screening rates across states, with Kentucky being the only state where screening rates aligned with lung cancer burden.
