A Brief Review on Primordial Black Holes as Dark Matter

Pablo Villanueva-Domingo et al.

Summary: This review discusses the formation, abundance, and characteristic signals of primordial black holes, as well as their impact on the evolution of the Universe and structure formation. It also explores the most relevant probes capable of constraining their masses and population.

Primordial black holes as a dark matter candidate

Anne M. Green et al.

Summary: The detection of gravitational waves from mergers of tens of Solar mass black hole binaries has sparked interest in primordial black holes as a dark matter candidate. This overview provides insights into the formation of primordial black holes, current constraints on their present day abundance, and key open questions in the field as of Summer 2020.

Constraints on primordial black holes

Bernard Carr et al.

Summary: In this article, constraints on the fraction of the Universe that may have gone into primordial black holes (PBHs) over a range of masses are updated. The discussion covers the reasons why PBHs smaller than a certain mass threshold are constrained and the various constraints on PBHs larger than that threshold.

Bounds on warm dark matter from Schwarzschild primordial black holes

Jeremy Auffinger et al.

Summary: Light dark matter candidates from evaporating Schwarzschild primordial black holes with negligible couplings to other particles are considered, belonging to warm dark matter but potentially spoiling structure formation, ruling out black hole domination for all spin values up to 2, and deriving less stringent upper limits on the parameter beta for radiation domination with higher candidate spin values.

Ultrahigh-energy photons up to 1.4 petaelectronvolts from 12 γ-ray Galactic sources

Zhen Cao et al.

Summary: The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt indicates the existence of PeVatrons, cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. Detection of ultrahigh-energy gamma radiation is a key signature of PeVatrons, with ongoing efforts to locate and identify these extreme accelerators. Despite detecting high-energy gamma rays from various sources, the exact origin and identity of the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy gamma rays remain unknown.

First Detection of sub-PeV Diffuse Gamma Rays from the Galactic Disk: Evidence for Ubiquitous Galactic Cosmic Rays beyond PeV Energies

M. Amenomori et al.

Summary: For the first time, researchers have detected diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. This provides strong evidence that cosmic rays are accelerated beyond PeV energies in our Galaxy and spread over the Galactic disk.

Dark matter spectra from the electroweak to the Planck scale

Summary: This study computes the decay spectrum of dark matter from scales above electroweak symmetry breaking to the Planck scale, providing crucial information for indirect detection experiments at high energies. The approach significantly improves existing methods by including all relevant electroweak interactions.

Ultralight fermionic dark matter

Hooman Davoudiasl et al.

Summary: The conventional lore excludes fermionic dark matter with mass lighter than a few hundred electronvolts based on the Pauli exclusion principle. A new method is proposed in this paper which involves numerous quasi-degenerate species of fermions without couplings to the standard model to evade this bound. Gravitational interactions impose constraints from measurements at the LHC, cosmic rays, supernovae, and black hole spins and lifetimes, with a particular limit on the number of distinct species of particles being less than or around 10^62.

GUT baryogenesis with primordial black holes

Dan Hooper et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the potential role of primordial black holes in GUT baryogenesis, showing that they can efficiently generate GUT Higgs or gauge bosons through Hawking evaporation regardless of particle masses or early Universe temperatures, and can naturally evade the sphaleron washout problem in certain parameter regions.
