Globally observed trends in mean and extreme river flow attributed to climate change

Lukas Gudmundsson et al.

Summary: The study analyzed global river flow data from 7250 observatories and found that anthropogenic climate change has an impact on river flow. The research showed that some regions are consistently experiencing drying trends, while others are consistently experiencing wetting trends.

Streamflow stationarity in a changing world

Yuting Yang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in catchments with minimal human disturbance, long-term annual streamflow tends to remain stationary in most cases, while in catchments with substantial human interventions, only a small percentage exhibit stationary flow. This underscores the significant impact of human activities on freshwater systems.

A 10 per cent increase in global land evapotranspiration from 2003 to 2019

Madeleine Pascolini-Campbell et al.

Summary: Global land evapotranspiration increased by 10% between 2003 and 2019, driven mainly by warming land temperatures. This increase has resulted in more land precipitation being partitioned into evapotranspiration rather than runoff. Observations also show that variability in global land evapotranspiration is positively correlated with the El Nino-Southern Oscillation.

Robust historical evapotranspiration trends across climate regimes

Sanaa Hobeichi et al.

Summary: Evapotranspiration plays a crucial role in linking the hydrological, energy, and carbon cycles on land, and understanding climate extremes. Two new versions of the Derived Optimal Linear Combination Evapotranspiration (DOLCE) product have been developed with observationally constrained uncertainty estimates, higher resolution, and extended temporal coverage. Novel ET climatology clusters have been derived based on the magnitude and variability of ET at each land location, showing robust increases in ET across most regions despite some areas exhibiting decreasing trends. The new datasets can be used for benchmarking global ET estimates and examining ET trends.

Long-term relative decline in evapotranspiration with increasing runoff on fractional land surfaces

Ren Wang et al.

Summary: This study used a machine learning approach to retrieve global latent heat flux and sensible heat flux for recent decades, finding a decreasing trend in the evaporative fraction and an increase in long-term runoff, indicating the significant impact of surface vegetation on regulating water and energy cycles and aridity variability.
