Disentangling the Within- and Between-Person Aspects of Implicit Alcohol Associations on Hazardous Drinking

Yusuke Shono et al.

Summary: This study examined the longitudinal contributions of between-person and within-person components of implicit alcohol associations (IAAs) to college students' hazardous drinking. The results showed that between-person average levels of IAAs were positively associated with hazardous drinking over time, while within-person fluctuations from the average levels of implicit drinking identity were associated with subsequent increases in higher-risk drinking.

Limitations of Cross-Lagged Panel Models in Addiction Research and Alternative Models: An Empirical Example Using Project MATCH

Andrew K. Littlefield et al.

Summary: This study highlights the interpretational limitations of the CLPM in addiction research and provides examples of alternative models. Alternative models show little evidence of prospective within-person associations, but more evidence for between-person associations and wave-specific within-person relations between constructs.

Three Extensions of the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model

Jeroen D. Mulder et al.

Summary: The random intercept cross-lagged panel model is a popular structural equation modeling approach for longitudinal data in psychology and related fields. This paper discusses three extensions of the RI-CLPM, including how to include stable individual characteristics, specify a multiple-group version, and incorporate multiple indicators, as well as how to run models to investigate underlying assumptions. A motivating example is provided to demonstrate various modeling options, along with fully annotated code for lavaan(R-package) and Mplus on an accompanying website.
