Optogenetic Stimulation of the Anterior Cingulate Cortex Modulates the Pain Processing in Neuropathic Pain: A Review

The exact mechanism of neuropathic pain in the ACC remains unclear, but optogenetics may offer a way to investigate and potentially modulate this neuronal activity.

Summary: This study assessed the long-term effectiveness of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in treating chronic neuropathic pain and correlated clinical results with neuroimaging. The findings showed that DBS remained effective in improving pain symptoms after 5 years of follow-up. Analgesic effects were achieved by stimulating not only the ventroposterolateral thalamic nucleus but also surrounding posterior ventrobasal thalamic structures and related spinothalamocortical tracts.
