In this study, MXene was reported as a host for sulfur in room-temperature alkali metal-sulfur batteries. The tunable spacing provided by MXene's multilayer structure enables the confinement of sulfur and prevents adverse polysulfide-carbonate reactions.
Room-temperature alkali metal-sulfur batteries are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries because of their high capacity and low inherent cost. Herein, we report MXene (Ti(3)C(2)Tx) as a host to confine sulfur (S-8), enabling the use of commercialization-friendly carbonate electrolyte in metal-sulfur batteries. The multilayer MXene structure provides tunable spacing for S-8 confinement, and its unique interlayer spacing prevents adverse polysulfide-carbonate reactions.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd.
