Diluted High Concentration Electrolyte with Dual Effects for Practical Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Zhipeng Jiang et al.

Summary: A modified diluted high concentration electrolyte (MDHCE) was designed for practical Li-S batteries to achieve high energy density and stable cycling. The MDHCE enables high stability and fast Li-ion transport at the hybrid interface, improving the reversibility of Li anode and kinetics of S cathode. The practicality of MDHCE was further demonstrated in a 0.4 Ah Li-S pouch cell with no obvious capacity fading and steady Coulombic efficiency of 99.6%.

Structural origin of the high-voltage instability of lithium cobalt oxide

Jianyuan Li et al.

Summary: Layered lithium cobalt oxide is a successful commercial cathode material in lithium-ion batteries, but its structural instability at high potentials poses challenges. By using advanced electron diffraction methods and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, researchers have identified that the curvature of cobalt oxide layers near the surface plays a crucial role in determining the structural stability and electrochemical performance of the material. This atomistic understanding of structure-performance relationships provides valuable insights for designing new cathode materials with superior stability at high voltages.

High-voltage liquid electrolytes for Li batteries: progress and perspectives

Xiulin Fan et al.

Summary: The energy density of LIBs has been increased threefold since their introduction, but the capacity of transition metal oxide cathodes is approaching its limit due to stability limitations of electrolytes. To further enhance energy density, new high-capacity and high-voltage cathode materials need to be explored, and graphite anodes may need to be replaced. One of the main challenges for future development is the development of new electrolyte compositions that can accommodate high-voltage cathodes and anodes while ensuring the stability of the batteries.
