Investigating the relationship between internal short circuit and thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries under thermal abuse condition

Dongsheng Ren et al.

Summary: Thermal runaway, a critical issue in the application of lithium-ion batteries, is a thermalelectrical coupled process where exothermic chemical reactions and internal short circuit coincide. This study investigates the relationship between internal short circuit and thermal runaway under thermal abuse conditions, finding the limited contribution of internal short circuit to thermal runaway. The results provide new insights into battery thermal runaway mechanism and safety design.

The nature of irreversible phase transformation propagation in nickel-rich layered cathode for lithium-ion batteries

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: Ni-rich layered cathode is a promising candidate for high energy density lithium-ion batteries, but suffers from capacity fading, structure failure, and thermal instability due to irreversible phase transformation (IPT). Understanding the IPT propagation mechanism is crucial, with research showing that the triggering factor is the initial surface disordered cation mixing domain, rather than the rock-salt phase itself. This finding clarifies the debate on surface impurity phases and reveals the origin of IPT propagation, suggesting the importance of tuning the surface microstructure to address the instability issues.

Insight into the Redox Reaction Heterogeneity within Secondary Particles of Nickel-Rich Layered Cathode Materials

Jiyang Li et al.

Summary: This study utilizes Raman spectroscopy to analyze the reaction heterogeneity within nickel-rich NCM secondary particles under high-rate conditions, revealing that oxidation/reduction reactions mainly occur on the surface of particles, leading to structural instability and decreased apparent capacity. The findings highlight the importance of understanding and addressing reaction heterogeneity in high-power lithium-ion batteries for improved performance.

The apparent capacity decay by kinetic degradation of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 during cycling under the high upper-limit charging potential

Jiyang Li et al.

Summary: The kinetic degradation of Li+ de-/intercalation is found to be a key factor for the apparent capacity decay of NCM523 under the high upper-limit charging potential. The apparent capacity loss can be restored significantly by reducing the current density or increasing the operating temperature. The formation of the electrochemical passivation layer on the surface of NCM523 particles is detected to be another important factor for the kinetic degradation.

Insight into the Kinetic Degradation of Stored Nickel-Rich Layered Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jiyang Li et al.

Summary: The study established the structure-performance relationship of nickel-rich NCM materials during storage in air from the aspect of Li+ kinetics. It was found that increased cation mixing slowed down solid-phase Li' diffusion kinetics and impurities on the material surface weakened charge transfer kinetics. The degradation of Li' kinetics during charge was more severe than during discharge, becoming the dominant factor for capacity fading during storage.

Thermal runaway mechanism of lithium-ion battery with LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode materials

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This paper illustrates the thermal runaway mechanism of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 based lithium-ion batteries and proves that the reaction between the cathode and flammable electrolyte is the trigger of thermal runaway accidents. Experimental results demonstrate that the vigorous exothermic reaction is initiated by the liberated oxygen species.

Unlocking the self-supported thermal runaway of high-energy lithium-ion batteries

Junxian Hou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that two endogenous oxygen pathways involved in strong exothermic reactions lead to uncontrollable states in the NMC811|graphite pouch cell, with significant safety concerns. Approximately 41% of thermal-induced oxygen reacts aggressively with ethylene carbonate at the cathode/electrolyte interface, accelerating the self-heating rate and triggering thermal runaway. The residual oxygen that survives the reaction with carbonate spreads to the lithiated anode, generating major heat and bringing the battery to the maximum destructive temperature during thermal runaway.

Thermal-responsive, super-strong, ultrathin firewalls for quenching thermal runaway in high-energy battery modules

Lei Li et al.

Summary: The smart firewall concept effectively prevents thermal runaway propagation in lithium-ion batteries, providing functions of heat dissipation, fire extinguishing, and thermal insulation. By utilizing non-flammable phase change materials and flexible silica nanofiber mats, the firewall can switch thermal physical properties and successfully suppress TR propagation.
