Generalization Process by Second Grade Students

Maria D. Torres et al.

Summary: This study described the reasoning process of 7- to 8-year-old second grade students in a generalization task involving the function y = x + 3. The research found three phases of inductive reasoning among the students, with correct recognition of structures and expression of generalization in three ways.

Process of Generalizing and Generality in Action. A Case Study

Cristina Ayala-Altamirano et al.

Summary: In a microgenetic analysis of the generalization process in problem-solving contexts, it was found that three fourth-grade students exhibited varying degrees of sophistication in expressing functional relationships. While one student explicitly expressed generalization, the other two students' actions hinted at an emerging awareness of indeterminacy or an element of analyticity.

Styles of reasoning for mathematics education

David Kollosche

Summary: A coherent theoretical framework of mathematical reasoning is needed in mathematics education research; Hacking's framework of styles of reasoning is introduced as a possible solution; different styles of reasoning define what we accept as decidable assertions and justifications for them.

Inductive and deductive justification of knowledge: epistemological beliefs and critical thinking at the beginning of studying mathematics

Benjamin Rott

Summary: The study found that epistemological beliefs among mathematics students can be distinguished into belief position and belief argumentation, with only the latter being correlated to mathematical critical thinking.

The role of generic examples in teachers' proving activities

Muhammed Fatih Dogan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates how in-service teachers interpret, understand, and use generic examples as part of their proving and justification activities, and finds that teachers produce three types of proof using generic examples. Teachers tend to prefer visual generic examples with symbolic representation for teaching purposes.
