Experimental flexural performance of concrete beams reinforced with an innovative hybrid bars

Mohamed Said et al.

Summary: The testing demonstrated that increasing the hybrid reinforcement ratio can significantly enhance the load-carrying capacity of concrete beams and provide better ductility. Non-linear finite element analysis effectively reflected the trend of experimental results, and parametric studies indicated that factors such as concrete compressive strength, hybrid reinforcement ratio, and shear-span to depth ratio have an impact on the performance of hybrid reinforcement concrete beams.

Summary: This paper proposes a design tool that combines experimental and numerical methods to investigate the failure modes of hollow PFRP profiles under four-point bending. The validated finite element model was used to thoroughly study the failure sequence and conduct a comprehensive parametric study on design parameters.

Manufacture and structural performance of modular hybrid FRP-timber thin-walled columns

Weiqi Cui et al.

Summary: Hybrid FRP-timber (HFT) thin-walled sections are high-performance and lightweight wood-based composite structures, with an improved modular manufacturing method proposed in this study. Experimental and numerical studies show that GFRP wrapping material has the most significant influence on section behavior, and increasing GFRP layers improves section strength and stiffness.

Design considerations for prefabricated composite jackets for structural repair: Parametric investigation and case study

Ali A. Mohammed et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the effective transverse tensile strength of the FRP joint should be as low as 20% of the jacket strength for structural repairs, and the grout stiffness dictates the stress transfer between the core and outer jacket. Increasing the compressive strength of the grout delays grout cracking and degradation, while rapidly increasing FRP joint strain. Additionally, numerical simulations show that the application of an FRP jacket can improve the strength capacity of a corroded steel column in an actual bridge by 320%, surpassing conventional FRP repair systems by 85%.

Nonlinear three-dimensional anisotropic material model for failure analysis of timber

Hooman Eslami et al.

Summary: This study proposes a constitutive material model for simulating the nonlinear mechanical response of timber under a three-dimensional stress state, implementing the model as a user material subroutine UMAT in ABAQUS. The results show a good agreement between numerical simulations and experimental data, suggesting that the proposed model can be further used in numerical simulations of timber's anisotropic behavior.

Axial compressive behaviour of RC columns strengthened with rectangular steel tube and cementitious grout jackets

Fengqin Wang et al.

Summary: The study presents an experimental investigation on the performance of welded steel tube and cementitious grout jacketing retrofitted RC columns, showing significant improvement in strength, stiffness and ductility. Results indicate that the axial compressive resistance of the columns decreases with increasing aspect ratio and concrete cross-sectional area ratio. A simplified analysis method based on limit equilibrium theory is proposed to predict the axial compressive resistance of the columns, which aligns well with experimental findings.
