An insight into shallow gas hydrates in the Dongsha area, South China Sea

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: Previous studies in the Dongsha area mainly focused on deep-seated gas hydrates, but recent research has confirmed the presence of shallow gas hydrates occurring as veins, nodules, or layers at 8-30 meters below the seafloor. Factors influencing the occurrences of shallow gas hydrates include fluid migration along faults and the presence of deep-seated gas hydrates. Geophysical data and high-resolution seismic profiles are effective in identifying shallow gas hydrates in the area.

Prospect of marine natural gas hydrate stimulation theory and technology system

Wu Nengyou et al.

Summary: The key to realizing the commercial production of natural gas hydrate (NGH) is to significantly increase the NGH productivity, whether by enlarging the drainage area, improving dissociation efficiency, or enhancing seepage conditions. The use of complex-structure wells, multiple-well patterns, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies can greatly increase NGH productivity. However, there are technical bottlenecks in fundamental research on NGH production that need to be addressed, such as sample preparation, simulated reservoir monitoring, and mechanical coupling technologies. The combined application of complex-structure wells, well-pattern production models, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies are key to increasing NGH productivity in a significant scale.
