Late Holocene palaeogeographic evolution of the Lihoura coastal plain, Pteleos Gulf, Central Greece

Summary: The present study investigates the palaeogeographic evolution of the coastal Lihoura plain in central-eastern Greece during the Late Holocene. Through core drilling, sediment analysis, and geomorphological mapping, the study reveals that the plain was inundated by seawater during the Mid-Holocene and later transformed into a protected lagoonal environment due to the development of a limestone peninsula. A recent high energy marine inundation event was also recorded in the northern part of the plain. The study estimates the average rates of sea-level rise during certain time periods.

Late Quaternary Marine Terraces and Tectonic Uplift Rates of the Broader Neapolis Area (SE Peloponnese, Greece)

Summary: This paper investigates the role of tectonic processes in the late Quaternary evolution of the coastal landscape in the Neapolis area. By studying marine terraces and using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating, the study finds a significant coastal uplift with a long-term uplift rate of 0.36 ± 0.11 mm/a.

Relative Sea Level Changes and Morphotectonic Implications Triggered by the Samos Earthquake of 30th October 2020

Summary: On 30th October 2020, a Mw = 7.0 earthquake shook the eastern Aegean Sea near the northern coasts of Samos island, causing uplift of the whole island, infrastructure damage, and a small tsunami. Geological, geomorphological, and biological observations revealed a complex character for the uplift, with maximum vertical displacements in the northwestern part and subsidence in the southeastern part. The study validated the importance of tidal notches as markers of co-seismic events and provided insights into the complex tectonics of the area.

Multiple Submerged Tidal Notches: A Witness of Sequences of Coseismic Subsidence in the Aegean Sea, Greece

Summary: This paper reconstructs sequences of coseismic subsidences and relative sea-level changes in the Late Holocene Aegean islands through the shape of tidal notches. The analysis reveals that the subsidence trends are not continuous with gradual movement, but rather result from repeated coseismic vertical subsidences. The estimated average return times are approximately some centuries to one millennium, providing useful indications on the long-term tectonic trends in the Aegean region.
