Synthesis of antibacterial polymer metal hybrids in irradiated poly-1-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole complexes with silver ions: pH tuning of nanoparticle sizes

Alexey Zezin et al.

Summary: In this study, poly-1-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole (PVT)-based materials with silver nanoparticles were synthesized by radiation-induced reduction. The interaction between PVT units and silver nanoparticles was influenced by the protonation of PVT functional groups. The acidity also affected the generation/growth ratio of nanoparticles. The resulting nanocomposites exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains.

Synthesis, Chemical-Physical Characterization, and Biomedical Applications of Functional Gold Nanoparticles: A Review

Ileana Ielo et al.

Summary: Gold nanoparticles exhibit excellent stability and biocompatibility, making them ideal candidates for medical and biological applications. Various synthetic methods, such as Turkevich synthesis, reduction with NaBH4, seeding growth, ascorbic acid-based, green synthesis, and Brust-Schiffrin methods, have been used to enhance their stability and features. Functionalization of the AuNP surface has led to the formation of self-assembled monolayers using polymer coatings as capping agents bonded to the nanoparticles. Common chemical-physical characterization techniques are used to determine the size, shape, and surface coverage of AuNPs for their biomedical and biotechnology applications.

Nanogold-loaded chitosan nanocomposites for pH/light-responsive drug release and synergistic chemo-photothermal cancer therapy

Dina S. Salem et al.

Summary: This study utilized a ternary system consisting of optimally prepared chitosan nanoparticles (ChNPs) efficiently encapsulating 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and loaded by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for synergistic chemophotothermal therapy. The synthesized nanocomposites exhibited excellent biocompatibility, stability, and killing efficiency of tumor cells, with a strong absorbance in the visible region promoting rapid drug release under laser exposure. The synergistic effect of the combined chemo-photothermal therapy was demonstrated through cytotoxicity experiments towards hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2), highlighting the high potential of the 5-FU-ChNPs@Au nanocomposites as a therapeutic platform.

Versatile Route toward Hydrophobically Polymer-Grafted Gold Nanoparticles from Aqueous Dispersions

Julian Sindram et al.

Summary: The stabilization of gold nanoparticles in organic solvents, using polymers as stabilizing ligands for introducing new properties and functionalities, is a key challenge for wider material applications. This study reports a method for functionalizing gold nanoparticles prepared by aqueous synthesis with hydrophobic polymer ligands, characterizing them in nonpolar organic dispersions. The approach involves transferring the gold nanoparticles from water to an organic medium using an auxiliary ligand, followed by displacement with thiolated polystyrene ligands to form a dense polymer brush, and studying the structure and colloidal stability in various organic solvents. The protocol is extended from small spherical gold nanoparticles to larger gold nanorods and nanocubes.
