Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical modelling for geothermal doublet system with 3D fractal fracture

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling model considering the deformation of fractal fractures is remarkably robust for modeling fracture opening and closing under coupling conditions. The evolution of fracture permeability presents certain heterogeneity related to fractal dimension, in-situ stress, and geothermal wells layout. Fractures with larger fractal dimension can interact more fully with the bedrock and further affect the thermal breakthrough.

A quantitative pre-warning for coal burst hazardous zones in a deep coal mine based on the spatio-temporal forecast of microseismic events

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a data-driven strategy to determine coal burst hazardous zones in deep coal mines based on quantitative predictions for microseismic events. A deep learning model, MSNet, accurately predicts the event location but shows less accuracy in predicting event timing and energy. The study also analyzes the causes of prediction errors and provides ways to enhance the model's performance.

Numerical Simulation of Water-Silt Inrush Hazard of Fault Rock: A Three-Phase Flow Model

Dan Ma et al.

Summary: A one-dimensional radial three-phase flow model of water-rock-silt was established to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of fault rock during water-silt inrush. The accuracy of the proposed model was verified through laboratory tests and the temporal-spatial distribution of hydraulic properties was obtained.

Solid grain migration on hydraulic properties of fault rocks in underground mining tunnel: Radial seepage experiments and verification of permeability prediction

Dan Ma et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the hydraulic properties of fault rock through one-dimensional radial seepage experiments. The results show that the permeability and porosity increase with time, and the occurrence process of water inflow can be divided into four stages. It is also found that the decrease of grain size distribution and the increase of water pressure lead to significant changes in hydraulic properties. The Carman-Kozoeny model demonstrates the highest accuracy among the tested prediction models, and it predicts a higher final permeability closer to the water outlet.

Experimental study on the flow behaviour of water-sand mixtures in fractured rock specimens

Boyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the flow behaviour of water-sand mixtures in fractured rocks, finding that water flow velocity is insensitive to the initial mass of the sand, but increases with the power exponent in the Talbot formula and specimen height. The outflow of the sand increases with these parameters, and shows an exponential relationship with water flow velocity.

Yanbin Yu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that mining-induced stress has a significant impact on the pore structure of coal seams and infusion seepage parameters, influencing the extent of pore opening and the permeability of water injection. The proposed research method can more accurately reflect the impact of coal seam mining on infusion seepage.

Effect of wetting-drying cycle on hydraulic and mechanical properties of cemented paste backfill of the recycled solid wastes

Dan Ma et al.

Summary: The study shows that with increasing wetting-drying cycles, the porosity and permeability of CPB samples increase, with those having smaller particle size distribution and cementing strength being more sensitive. The uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of CPB samples deteriorate during wetting-drying cycles, especially for those with smaller particle size distribution and cementing strength. The deterioration process of mechanical properties of CPB samples due to wetting-drying cycles can be divided into initial deterioration and re-deterioration stages, with the periodic destruction of the cemented structures verified through microstructure analysis.

Numerical simulation of single and two-phase flow across 90° vertical elbows

Shouxu Qiao et al.

Summary: This study reveals that elbows create secondary flow with two counter-rotating vortices in both single-phase and two-phase flows. These vortices dissipate downstream, with the additional buoyant force in two-phase flow leading to a longer dissipating length for the elbow effect.

Reutilization of gangue wastes in underground backfilling mining: Overburden aquifer protection

Dan Ma et al.

Summary: Gangue backfilling mining (GBM) can effectively alleviate gangue pollution and protect overburden aquifers. The hydraulic properties and deformation behaviors of granular gangues were studied, showing that these properties vary with the original grain size grade and stress rate. An improved model based on fractal dimension was found to have better accuracy in predicting permeability evolution compared to the traditional Kruger model.

Experimental Study on Sand Inrush Hazard of Water-Sand Two-Phase Flow in Broken Rock Mass

Junce Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that the porosity and skeleton structure of the broken rock mass are key factors affecting water and sand inrush disasters. A smaller initial porosity in the broken rock mass leads to weaker permeability and less likelihood of forming dominant channels, while a larger size gradation in the structure is more likely to form permeable channels, resulting in more severe water-sand mixture seepage.

Size effect on the hydraulic behavior of fluid flow through a single rough -walled fracture

Zhen Zhong et al.

Summary: This study provides a numerical approach to evaluate the effect of sample sizes on fluid flow through a single rough-walled fracture. The simulated results show a positive correlation between hydraulic conductivity and fracture sizes, with a representative size ranging from 12 m to 16 m. Additionally, it was found that the representative size tends to decrease with an increase in the mean fracture apertures, while tends to increase as the fracture roughness or the normal stress increases.
