Evaluating the filtration efficiency of commercial facemasks' materials against respiratory aerosol droplets

Satya S. Patra et al.

Summary: Respiratory droplets are a common transmission mechanism for many pathogens, and facemasks are used to reduce this risk. A study evaluated the filtration efficiencies of commonly available commercial facemasks materials in a size range of 0.3-10 μm, with results showing different performance rankings for different materials. After washing, the filtration efficiencies of the materials decreased, with a more pronounced decrease for sub-micron particles.

Summary: This study found that wearing masks was significantly associated with a reduced risk of COVID-19 infection, especially for healthcare workers, with masks showing a nearly 70% reduction in infection risk. Robust randomized trials are needed in the future to further validate these findings.

Summary: According to a randomized controlled trial conducted in Denmark, recommending surgical mask use did not significantly reduce the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate, but the results indicated that there may still be some degree of self-protection as suggested by the confidence intervals and related research.

Hui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study outlined the cluster transmission of COVID-19 in Xi'an City during the early stages of the pandemic, emphasizing the ease of transmission within families and hospitals, with asymptomatic patients possibly serving as a source of transmission. The findings support the recommendation for early medical quarantine observation and screening of all confirmed cases and their close contacts.

Airborne transmission of COVID-19 and the role of face mask to prevent it: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Seyed-Amir Tabatabaeizadeh

Summary: This meta-analysis of four articles involving 7688 participants showed a significant reduction in COVID-19 infection risk with the use of face masks, indicating an association between face mask use and COVID-19 reduction. However, the primary spread of COVID-19 is through contact routes and respiratory droplets, and there is still controversy and mysteries surrounding the airborne transmission of COVID-19.
