Summary: The study found a close relationship between FoMO, SNS use, and smartphone addiction, with excessive social media use and higher levels of FoMO contributing to smartphone addiction. Smartphone addiction may also lead to increased SNS use and higher levels of FoMO, suggesting a bidirectional influence between these factors. Gender differences in FoMO, smartphone addiction, and motivation for SNS use should be further explored in future research.

Gender differences in the relationship between problematic internet use and nomophobia

The results showed that loneliness/depression, distraction, and diminished impulse control were significantly related to nomophobia. Prediction of problematic social media use (PSU) using machine learning approaches

Dark Triad of Personality and Problematic Smartphone Use: A Preliminary Study on the Mediating Role of Fear of Missing Out

Summary: The study explored the relationship between Dark Triad traits, fear of missing out, and problematic smartphone use, finding that narcissism was directly linked to PSU and that FoMO partially mediated the association between narcissism and PSU. Machiavellianism and narcissism were also directly associated with FoMO, and FoMO was found to be related to PSU in a fully mediated model. These findings suggest that Machiavellianism and narcissism may play a role in the development of FoMO and PSU.

Self-control and problematic smartphone use among Italian University students: The mediating role of the fear of missing out and of smartphone use patterns

Summary: The study found that among Italian university students, females scored higher in problematic smartphone use, self-control, and socializing smartphone use patterns, while males scored higher in information-seeking and entertainment. Fear of missing out partially mediated the relationship between self-control and problematic smartphone use, while smartphone use patterns did not. However, a significant indirect effect emerged when smartphone use patterns were related to fear of missing out.
