Review of foam stability in porous media: The effect of coarsening

Wei Yu et al.

Summary: Foam stability in porous media is crucial for industrial applications like enhanced oil recovery and CO2 geological sequestration, with coarsening dominating the evolution of foam structure due to scale effects. The confinement in rock matrices decreases foam coarsening rates, and various models based on Fick's diffusion law have been reviewed to understand foam coarsening mechanisms. Proper selection of foaming agents and gas phases is critical, while experimental methods such as optical and AFM are commonly used to study foam coarsening processes.

A review on parameters affecting nanoparticles stabilized foam performance based on recent analyses

Shahrul Aida Ab Rasid et al.

Summary: Oil presence decreases foam stability, while increasing NP concentration, decreasing NP size, temperature, NP retention, and salinity lead to increased stability. Optimum points exist for parameters like NP surface wettability, NP types, and shear rate/flow velocity for best foam performance. NP loss in a porous medium is an economically damaging process, and identifying mechanisms and strategies for minimizing their influence is crucial for future research.

The Effect of Salt on Stability of Aqueous Foams

Oyindamola Obisesan et al.

Summary: The impact of salt on the drainage behavior of aqueous foams was investigated in this study. It was found that NaCl-containing foams showed decreased drainage with lower foam quality, while CaCl2-containing foams did not exhibit a clear trend with foam quality. The effect of salt content on foam rheology was minimal.

High performance carbon dioxide foams of nanocomposites of binary colloids for effective carbon utilization in enhanced oil recovery applications

Ravi Shankar Kumar et al.

Summary: The study focuses on stabilizing CO2 foams using binary nanocomposites at moderate pressure and temperature, resulting in improved thermal stability and rheological behavior. The inclusion of TiO2 NP enhances adsorption and reduces bubble size, leading to a foam with minimal dependency on varying shear, pressure, and temperature conditions. The research highlights the potential of these nanocomposites for real field applications in CO2 based oil recovery.

Kang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates aqueous CO2 foam stabilized with a synergy of hydrophilic nanoparticles and nonionic surfactants under elevated temperatures and extreme salinities. The results show that the T40/C12E23 foam has good temperature and salinity tolerance, and can significantly increase oil recovery in simulation models.

The synergistic role of silica nanoparticle and anionic surfactant on the static and dynamic CO2 foam stability for enhanced heavy oil recovery: An experimental study

Jing Zhao et al.

Summary: This study used two types of silica nanoparticles with varying hydrophobicity in combination with sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate to enhance CO2 foam stability. The results showed that partially hydrophobic nanoparticles were more efficient in generating and stabilizing CO2 foam when mixed with AOT in a proportion of 1:0.16 (wt%/wt%). The synergistic interactions between AOT and NPB led to enhanced mechanical strength of bubbles, higher resistance to gas flow, reduced oil/water interfacial tension, and increased incremental oil recovery.

Modulation of Surface Charge by Mediating Surface Chemical Structures in Nonpolar Solvents with Nonionic Surfactant Used as Charge Additives

Zhixiang Chen et al.

Summary: Controlling the surface charging strength in nonpolar solvents is a major challenge when it comes to colloidal stability. By tuning surface chemical structures and using nonionic surfactants as charge additives, the surface charge can be modulated. Various self-assembled monolayers were coated onto specific surfaces and nanoparticles in this study to obtain different chemical structures, with techniques like XPS and AFM used to quantify these structures. Optimizing surface charging was achieved by adjusting the concentration of electron acceptors and donors, while the strength of particle charging decreased above a certain surfactant concentration due to competition between adsorption stability and charge neutralization effect.

Xindi Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the plugging performance of HPAM-Cr(III) polymer gel in CO2 flooding reservoirs through laboratory experiments and numerical analysis. It was found that the polymer gel has higher breakthrough pressure in low-permeability cores, with a greater reduction in permeability to water compared to that to CO2. The disproportionate permeability reduction was more prominent in low-permeability cores.
