Comprehensive review on alloy design, processing, and performance of β Titanium alloys as biomedical materials

Sumit Bahl et al.

Summary: This review discusses the development process of metastable beta Ti alloys, including compositional design, thermo-mechanical processing, and material performance evaluation, focusing on the strategies for designing low modulus compositions and processing routes for achieving high strength to modulus ratio suitable for orthopedic applications. The effect of processing on performance metrics of these alloys in terms of fatigue resistance, tribological response, corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility is reviewed. Additionally, targeted research areas for the future are highlighted with encouraging strategies aimed at ensuring clinical application of beta Ti alloys.

Critical role of scan strategies on the development of microstructure, texture, and residual stresses during laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

Naresh Nadammal et al.

Summary: This study investigated four different scan strategies and their impact on microstructure, texture, and residual stresses in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing of Inconel 718. The results showed that manipulating scan strategies can effectively control the development of microstructure, texture, and residual stresses, leading to lower distortions in the fabricated components.

Summary: By utilizing selective laser melting (SLM) and tailored heat treatment, it is possible to improve the ductility of additively manufactured bone plates, making them comparable to those made from wrought alloy. This has important implications for the fabrication of patient-specific metallic orthopedic devices without compromising their biomechanical performance.
