Silicon as a mitigator of water deficit stress in radish crop

Vander Rocha Lacerda et al.

Summary: The research investigated the use of silicate as a substitute for dolomitic limestone to enhance radish plants' tolerance to water deficiency. Results showed that silicate indeed provided tolerance to water stress, reduced the percentage of cracked roots, and increased yield in the radish crop. Thus, the use of silicate in areas with low water availability is crucial for crop productivity.

Synthesis of biocompatible and highly fluorescent N-doped silicon quantum dots from wheat straw and ionic liquids for heavy metal detection and cell imaging

Jianqiang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, SiQDs doped with nitrogen were successfully synthesized using waste wheat straw and allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. These SiQDs showed excellent water dispersity and strong fluorescence emission, making them suitable for metal detection and cell imaging. The SiQDs displayed linear fluorescence quenching with Cr(VI) and Fe(III) concentrations, and when immobilized on hydrophilic silica hydrogels, they exhibited enhanced fluorescence emission and selective detection abilities. Cell imaging results showed low cytotoxicity of the SiQDs, indicating their potential as biocompatible fluorescent nanomaterials.

Determination of Salmonella Typhimurium by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy Using a Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Carbide (a-SiC:H) Thin Film

Francisco Javier Gomez-Montano et al.

Summary: Salmonella is a major microorganism causing food-borne illnesses globally, and the development of devices for rapid and accurate detection of bacteria is necessary. In this study, self-assembled monolayers were used on a-SiC:H thin films to determine Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, confirming the utility of a-SiC:H for reliable and rapid detection of Salmonella.

Ti/4H-SiC schottky barrier modulation by ultrathin a-SiC:H interface layer

Fabian Triendl et al.

Summary: The study investigates the modulation of Schottky barrier height in conventional Ti/4H-SiC Schottky diodes by inserting an ultrathin a-SiC:H layer and annealing at 600 degrees C. It was found that incorporating an a-SiC:H interface layer in combination with thermal annealing can result in very ideal diode characteristics, with the possibility of adjusting the Schottky barrier height through annealing duration.

Tailoring B-doped silicon nanocrystal surface chemistry via phosphorous pentachloride - mediated surface alkoxylation

Sarah Milliken et al.

Summary: Doped silicon nanocrystals with organic solubility were prepared through thermal processing and functionalized with alkoxy ligands of varied chain lengths induced by phosphorous pentachloride etching. This scalable method not only offers a potential avenue for functionalizing other doped SiNCs, but also provides greater tunability of material properties and broader solvent compatibility.
