Role of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate in enhancing coal dewatering: Experiments and theoretical calculations

Lin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as an accelerator in the dehydration process of low-rank coal slime. The results show that adding a certain amount of SDBS promotes water removal from the coal slime. XPS measurements and MD simulations reveal that SDBS adsorbs onto the oxygen-containing functional groups on the coal surface, improving water mobility and enhancing coal hydrophobicity.

Draining solar drying of sewage sludge: Experimental study and modeling

Azza Masmoudi et al.

Summary: Solar drying of sludge is seen as an innovative solution in sanitation, with studies showing that increasing air flow can reduce drying time. The Midilli-Kucuk model is found to be the most reliable in describing drying kinetics for both summer and winter conditions. Additionally, results indicate that effective diffusivity increases with higher air flow rate and ambient temperature.

Experimental research on morphology and drying characteristics of coal slime dough injected into circulating fluidized bed boiler

Haodong Fan et al.

Summary: Co-firing coal slime in CFB boilers is an effective method for utilizing industrial solid waste with high water content, viscosity, ash content, and low calorific value. The study on the morphology and drying characteristics of coal slime dough showed that the compression degree and water content influence the tensile force, with a quadratic relationship established. Predictions of breaking length at different feeding locations were made, along with calculations of temperature changes during drying inside the furnace.

Advanced solid-liquid separation for dewatering fine coal tailings by combining chemical reagents and solid bowl centrifugation

Cuong V. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of clay mineral surface chemistry in the dewatering process of clay-rich mine tailings. By neutralizing the clay surface charge with salts and flocculating with salt-resistant flocculants, an effective dewatering technique can be achieved. Combining chemical reagents with solid bowl centrifugation can deliver successful dewatering outcomes and improve water quality for recycling.

Flocculation and dewatering of oil sands tailings with a novel functionalized polyolefin flocculant

Zahra Rostami Najafabadi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of EPDM-g-HPMA flocculants on the flocculation and dewatering of oil sands mature fine tailings. Flocculants with high molecular weight grafts and low grafting densities showed better performance in reducing settling rates, decreasing supernatant turbidity, and increasing solids content. Shorter EPDM backbones resulted in faster sediment settling, lower supernatant turbidity, and higher solids content in the sediments.

Effect of the benzene ring of the dispersant on the rheological characteristics of coal-water slurry: Experiments and theoretical calculations

Lin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, low-rank coal-water slurry (LCWS) was prepared using PDPE and PLE as dispersants. The results showed that PDPE exhibited better pulping performance than PLE, with its benzene ring facilitating adsorption on coal through pi-pi stacking effect. Simulation results indicated that PDPE adsorbed on coal more easily and had a more stable binding compared to PLE.

Destabilising persistent coal froth using silicone oil

Shiqi Liu et al.

Summary: Persistent froth is common in coal and mineral flotation plants, presenting challenges. Coal froth is more stable than foam due to the formation of thin capillaries and tightly arranged particles on bubble surfaces. Smaller droplets cannot destabilise coal froth, leading to a critical droplet size depending on particle size.

Enhanced dewatering of oil sands tailings by a novel water-soluble cationic polymer

Vahid Vajihinejad et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flocculation of oil sands mature fine tailings (MFT) using poly(VBTMAC) as a flocculant, showing that the polymer's hydrophobic nature and positive charges contribute to neutralizing the negative charges of MFT clays and forming larger aggregates. The results demonstrate that poly(VBTMAC) outperforms commercially available anionic polyacrylamides in terms of production ease, dewatering rate, and sediment strength, but requires higher dosages for better performance.
