A comparative genomics examination of desiccation tolerance and sensitivity in two sister grass species

Ricardo A. Chavez-Montes et al.

Summary: Desiccation tolerance is an ancient and complex trait. This study explored the mechanisms of vegetative desiccation tolerance in two closely related grass species and found that it likely evolved from seed desiccation tolerance and represents a recent evolution in one of the species.

Antioxidant Defense during Recovery of Resurrection Plant Haberlea rhodopensis from Drought- and Freezing-Induced Desiccation

Gergana Mihailova et al.

Summary: This study assessed the contribution of nonenzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants in the recovery of Haberlea rhodopensis from drought- and freezing-induced desiccation. The results showed that ascorbate and glutathione content remained high during the initial hours of rehydration, indicating their importance in protecting plants from oxidative damage. The activity of antioxidant enzymes increased during the early stages of recovery and certain differences between the two plant groups were observed later during the rehydration process.

Viability markers for determination of desiccation tolerance and critical stages during dehydration in Selaginella species

Gerardo Alejo-Jacuinde et al.

Summary: A simple and reproducible system to determine desiccation tolerance in Selaginella species has been developed using various methodologies such as TTC staining, measurement of PSII quantum efficiency, antioxidant potential, and relative electrolyte leakage to determine tissue viability upon desiccation. The results suggest that the TTC test is a reliable method to identify desiccation-tolerant Selaginella species and can also indicate viability in other desiccation-tolerant models.

Unexplored dimensions of variability in vegetative desiccation tolerance

Rose A. Marks et al.

Summary: Desiccation tolerance has evolved repeatedly in different land plant lineages, leading to substantial variation in phenotype and underlying mechanisms across diverse lineages, populations, and individual plants. Leveraging natural diversity of desiccation-tolerant plants can improve our mechanistic understanding of desiccation tolerance. It is important to quantify this variability across different lineages, populations, and life stages of plants, as it can provide deeper insights into the complexities of desiccation tolerance.

Frozen in the dark: interplay of night-time activity of xanthophyll cycle, xylem attributes, and desiccation tolerance in fern resistance to winter

Beatriz Fernandez-Marin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the freezing tolerance of fern species is associated with desiccation tolerance, complementary xylem properties, and effective photoprotection mechanisms. Only desiccation-tolerant species are able to tolerate freezing, with an important factor being the properties of the tracheids.

Underwater CAM photosynthesis elucidated by Isoetes genome

David Wickell et al.

Summary: Despite the extensive characterization of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) in terrestrial angiosperms, little attention has been given to aquatics and early diverging land plants. Here, the authors assemble the genome of Isoetes taiwanensis and investigate the genetic factors driving CAM in this aquatic lycophyte. Despite broad similarities between CAM in Isoetes and terrestrial angiosperms, several key differences are identified, including the recruitment of 'bacterial-type' PEPC and diverged circadian control of key CAM pathway genes in Isoetes.

Summary: Resurrection plants are valuable models for studying the complex biology of vegetative desiccation tolerance, with research focus mainly in South Africa, Bulgaria, Germany, and China. While most studies have employed physiological and transcriptomic methodologies on leaves, there is a lack of research on roots and metagenomics.

Xuan Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed the dynamic changes in gene, protein, and metabolite levels of the resurrection plant Craterostigma plantagineum during dehydration and recovery, emphasizing the roles in regulating photosynthesis, energy metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. These changes indicate that plants undergo precise metabolic reprogramming to optimize performance and enhance drought tolerance under stress.

The role of antioxidant defense in freezing tolerance of resurrection plant Haberlea rhodopensis

Katya Georgieva et al.

Summary: The study investigated the role of antioxidant defense in cold acclimation and freezing tolerance of the desiccation-tolerant plant Haberlea rhodopensis Friv. Flavonoids and anthocyanin content increased significantly during freezing-induced desiccation, while total polyphenols increased after cold acclimation. Specific isoenzymes of antioxidant enzymes were upregulated, indicating their important role in oxidative stress resistance.

Cold acclimation and prospects for cold-resilient crops

Collin L. Juurakko et al.

Summary: Low temperatures present challenges for crops with significant economic impacts. Frost accounts for over 30% of weather-related crop losses in some temperate regions, particularly affecting small holdings and communities reliant on abundant harvests. Plants have evolved complex mechanisms and symbiotic relationships to adapt to low temperatures and pathogen-induced freezing.
