Foliar Application of Salicylic Acid Improves Salt Tolerance of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench)

Ahmad Rajabi Dehnavi et al.

Summary: The foliar application of salicylic acid has been shown to improve sorghum growth under saline conditions by regulating plant metabolism and antioxidant capacity. A concentration of 150 mg/L of salicylic acid was found to be most effective for alleviating the adverse effects of salt stress, while a concentration of 100 mg/L was most effective for improving sorghum growth under non-saline conditions.

Maternal salinity influences anatomical parameters, pectin content, biochemical and genetic modifications of two Salicornia europaea populations under salt stress

S. Cardenas-Perez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of maternal habitats on the physiology and anatomy of Salicornia europaea under different salinity conditions. The results showed that the Inw population exhibited higher cell area and roundness, as well as higher tolerance indicators, under high salinity. On the other hand, the Cie population had higher hydrogen peroxide and peroxidase activity. Gene expression analysis revealed differences between the two populations and suggested the important role of Na+ sequestration into the vacuoles. These findings indicate that the maternal environment plays a significant role in shaping the physiological and anatomical characteristics of local S. europaea populations.

An overview of the emerging trends of the Salicornia L. genus as a sustainable crop

S. Cardenas-Perez et al.

Summary: Salicornia, a genus of salt-tolerant plants, has diverse industrial and ecological applications as a sustainable crop. Its bioactive compounds provide health benefits and can be used in pharmaceutics and food industry. With high commercial and culinary value, it also serves as a salt substitute and a potential source for biofuel production.

Effect of irrigation salinity and ecotype on the growth, physiological indicators and seed yield and quality of Salicornia europaea

Jose L. Araus et al.

Summary: The study found that the euhalophyte species Salicornia europaea shows significant differences in growth and seed yield in different salinity levels, with higher adaptability to fresh and brackish water. Additionally, hypersaline water has a significant inhibitory effect on germination and growth of Salicornia europaea.

Differential Salt Tolerance Strategies in Three Halophytes from the Same Ecological Habitat: Augmentation of Antioxidant Enzymes and Compounds

AbdEl-Mageed F. M. Ghanem et al.

Summary: Understanding the salt tolerance mechanism in obligate halophytes can provide valuable information for conservation and re-habitation of saline areas. The study found that different obligate halophytes have different responses to salt stress, with Salicornia europaea showing the lowest biomass and growth inhibition under salinity, while Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and Sarcocornia fruticosa exhibited promotion of growth under low salinity and maintenance under high salinity.

Nutritional Characterization and Storage Ability of Salicornia ramosissima and Sarcocornia perennis for Fresh Vegetable Salads

Maria Dulce Antunes et al.

Summary: The study found that both Sarcocornia perennis and Salicornia ramosissima have potential as fresh salads, with good nutritional value and antioxidant activity while maintaining low microbial contamination. Tips harvested in the early season (May) showed better appearance and nutritional quality compared to those harvested at the end of the season (July).
