Physicochemical degradation of phycocyanin and means to improve its stability: A short review

Aida Adjali et al.

Summary: The cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis, spirulina, produces pigments like phycobiliprotein and phycocyanin. Phycocyanin, known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties, is used in various industries. Factors like pH, temperature, and light affect its stability, with encapsulation in nano- or micro-structured materials being a promising method for enhancement.

A novel method for double encapsulation of C-phycocyanin using aqueous two phase systems for extension of shelf life

A. Chandralekha et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of aqueous two phase systems (ATPSs) as carrier materials for double encapsulation of C-phycocyanin (C-PC). It found that PEG/Dextran as a carrier material at a volume ratio of 0.25 resulted in the highest retention of blue color, purity, and yield of C-PC. The results indicate that ATPS can be an effective carrier material for double encapsulation of biomolecules.

Development of a method for phycocyanin recovery from filamentous cyanobacteria and evaluation of its stability and antioxidant capacity

Jinichi Aoki et al.

Summary: A new method was developed to efficiently recover phycocyanin from filamentous cyanobacteria Pseudanabaena sp. ABRG5-3 and Limnothrix sp. SK1-2-1, yielding 28-30% dry cell weight of pure phycocyanin. The stability of phycocyanins at different pH levels, high temperatures, and light conditions, as well as their antioxidant abilities, were assessed with positive results, showing potential for low-cost production of high functional phycocyanin concentrations.
