Functional response of Betula species to edaphic and nutrient stress during restoration of fly ash deposits in the Middle Urals (Russia)

Irina V. Kalashnikova et al.

Summary: The study showed that Betula species growing on fly ash deposits exhibited higher leaf area ratio and leaf mass ratio, while preserving interspecific differences in leaf morphology. Higher leaf thickness in trees on the ash deposit led to increased chlorophyll and nitrogen content per leaf area, resulting in improved photosynthesis and water use efficiency. This adjustment at both whole-plant and leaf levels enables Betula species to colonize technogenic substrates like fly ash deposits.

Foliar Concentrations of Selected Elements, Assessment of Oxidative Stress Markers and Role of Antioxidant Defense System is Associated with Fly Ash Stress Tolerance inWithania somnifera

Sami Ullah Qadir et al.

Summary: Increased dependence on thermal power has led to a significant increase in fly ash generation, contributing to environmental pollution. Planting vegetation over fly ash dumps can help mitigate pollution, although plants themselves are also affected by pollution. Withania somnifera growing near a thermal power plant showed higher metal concentrations and signs of oxidative stress compared to plants at a control site.

Exploring the new dimensions of selenium research to understand the underlying mechanism of its uptake, translocation, and accumulation

Meenakshi Raina et al.

Summary: Selenium is a vital mineral for plants and animals, but plants vary in their physiological response and uptake of selenium. Genetic control determines the selenium content in edible plants, with high concentrations potentially harmful to plant health. Understanding selenium uptake and metabolism in plants can lead to genetic biofortification and phytoremediation.
